Hey Jason . . . well, regarding the Rossi BC-90 skis, I still consider myself pretty much of a novice at this kind of stuff, so please bear that in mind! Anyway, my reasons for opting to go with the BC-90's was based upon recommendations from a couple of friends + I had borrowed some Rossi BC-65's and could see that they were unsuitable for my off-trail pursuits + I could buy the Rossi BC-90's at EMS where I had a Gift Certificate!
Rather than mount a 3-pin binding system on my BC-90's, I opted to go with a simple NNN Rossignol BC Magnum step-in style binding. This allows me to easily & quickly get into/out of my skis for those times when I want to negotiate a steep/tricky spot, and/or stash my skis then switch to snowshoes for a prolonged final approach that is too steep/rocky for my comfort-level on skis.
I'm told that you have better control for making turns if you have a beefier 3-pin binding and a good pair of boots. However, I was willing to sacrifice the maneuverability, and figure I can always have a beefier binding mounted at some later date if I so choose.
Like I indicated in my Trip Report, I really like the floatation that the rather wide BC-90 provides, and think it is at least as good as the floatation provided by my MSR Denali snowshoes.
Hopefully there is something here that you'll find useful. But, if not, please feel free to ask me any specific questions you might have.
John
