Over in one of the facebook groups, someone posted about these replica signs, made in New Hampshire. Far less expensive ($50-65) than the AMC auction prices.
I had this replica made a number of years ago. It is indistinguishable from the actual sign...except that Carrigain is spelled correctly...;)

I got it from some place in MA on Etsy.

The Lincoln Brook Trail sign at the Franconia Brook crossing about 1/8 mile from 13 Falls was laying on the ground today. I thought about doing my part and picking up the "litter" and perhaps putting it on ebay. ;) I ended up leaning it against a tree.

I've often wondered if the NH USFS has ever considered having metal signs like some areas in the West? Am thinking especially of Mt Shasta. These signs are steel plates with laser-cut lettering. Quite attractive and more than capable of withstanding the battering of trekking poles unlike the wooden signs in the East.

If they're the brown with routed lettering ones I've seen, I think that's what they mean by "or appearing so." The guidelines are ridiculously detailed. The chapter on trail signs is 61 pages long.
I missed the (appearing so) in your reply. :)

Yes, they kind of do appear so from a distance.
