  • The Qunochchaug and East beaches are just long stretches of beach mostly deserted because the breachways make them dead ends. Q beach is about 1.5 miles walk east beach 2.5 and all it is all sand and crashing surf. Both have parking issues, in fact Q Beach parking lot is private with guards, at least in season, virtually abandoned off season.

Napatree is 1.5 (all distances one way) and is tamer but has a nice rough rocky shore at end. there is an abandoned Spanish American era war fort (Fort Mansfield) at the end which is worth the trip, I love it there in the winter or in a storm.

A few years ago we walked Block Island from North to South, that included walking along the beach below Clayhead. It was a beautiful day with dynamic September skies. After decades of day trips we decided to take the car and spend a few nights out there-we took the car so we could drive to all the walks we were never able to get to. It was a fantastic week and full of sunrises sunsets and everything in between.

I am hoping to go back there and do another north to south trip someday, when the time is right.
Thanks John. I'm a lifelong RI'er but I've never heard of those beaches. My hike on Block Island actually went by Clayhead. The beach below it was beautiful. Some of that walk would be underwater at high tide, I believe, but my wife and I made it with no problem, all the way back to town.

    Happy trails.
Hi John. What are the other 2 great beach walks in RI ? I'm just curious. I once hiked on Block Island from the north light to Old Harbor, the best beach walk I've ever taken.
Thank-you everyone, that answered my question though not what I wanted to hear. I think that is humbling to realize that we don't have control over nature like I sometimes think we think we do.

Ever since the coyote scare, I have been afraid to let Domino outside in the yard, especially since she always barks at something in the woods. I was glad to see a feral cat out there this AM which to me is a good sign.

About pack hunting: while riding a few years ago in Foster RI, directly south of where that high pointing hiker was held at gunpoint for trying to climb RI's highpoint-I was chased by a pack of dogs from a yard of one those questionable, rundown dirtbag places. The dogs chased me and while scary as heck, in retrospect it was interesting to see how they did it, two dogs chased from the sides trying to nip and another got ahead and tried to slow me down, so just one of the others could take a bite of my down tube, the vibration of which I can still feel today.
