  • I met a fellow last summer up on Moriah who told me that Steve Smith, guidebook author, told him the Moriah Brook Trail from the east side is one of the most beautiful routes in the Whites, and reaching Moriah by this way would include that lovely section of the Carter-Moriah Trail that you and I like so much. This year I'll have to try it (my dog Tuckerman needs Moriah for his list anyway). I'm not much of a believer in woo-woo "power spots" and all that, but there's something about the way the ledges catch the light in that section that is magical.

Are you trying to do all 48 in each season this year? That'd be an astonishing accomplishment!
Larisa, I believe I'm woefully late in thanking you for the green spot for the Lafayette & Memory TR. But thank you! I really appreciate your reading of these TRs, especially when they tend to meander off-topic. I'm thinking about writing my next few TRs in strict haiku, just to stay focused!
Sorry I can't do Owls Head in the next few weeks. This weekend I'm looking at new trailers and next weekend we are heading to Maine to hike Old Speck.

What peaks do you have left? You must be close to finishing.
Yes by god, my whole life has been turned around because I posted online how I moved some branches. Now all these beautiful women want to spend time with me. Why didn't I mention these ordinary acts of trail maintenance sooner?? Good thing I finally came around to it!
Hey LRiz..thanks for the greenie..and especial thanks for all your great trip reports and photos..really some of the best stuff out there..certainly helped motivation and rehab level around the house..It felt so good to be out there on tuesday
Thank you very much for the green spot, Larisa. Much appreciated!

The unpopularity of the Skook is a continuing mystery to me. It's just a wonderful trail -- why do so many people prefer to hike the Old Bridle highway?

I was going to mention this is a general post but I think it's better kept just among us who love the Skook: A friend tells me there is a shortcut that takes off about a mile. Instead of starting on the trail at the trailhead, walk down the bike/XC ski path toward Cannon Mountain about a half-mile or so to where there's a picnic table, near where the path crosses over Skookumchuck Brook. Behind the table (and behind some bushes, my friend says) is the old Skook route that follows the brook. Not so far up the brook you meet the current Skook. I've not tried this alternate but definitely will next time I'm up that way.

    Best,
    /Steve
thanks for the greenie! Gee....I wonder where you're hiking this weekend? :-D
Not sure when I'll be back in the Whites...maybe two weekends from now. Heading to Maine this weekend.
I learned long ago monorail season is not fun, so I have been sticking mostly southern trips chasing spring up into the Whites. This is the time of year I get to visit places I would normally forego in lieu of the Whites. Mt Tom (in Mass), Belknaps, Mt. Cube, these are the things I am sticking to for about another couple/few weeks.
Thank you- your TR was as detailed and useful as I have seen! I expect conditions the first week of May will be different- not sure if better or worse. I am curious around Jefferson, thats the spot recent reports seem to be highlighting. Also the Gulfside to the Jewel. We are possibly traversing the ridge over a couple of days, and my companion doesn't have NH winter experience (read icy exposed areas) although he has proper gear.
Thanks for the green square, Larisa. Yeah, too bad we didn't hike the same day you did, 'twould have been very nice to run into you out there. As for what's next, I don't know. We're running out of options until the access roads open/snow melts/water crossings are manageable. May have to wait a few weeks before the next one. And yourself?
Thanks for the greene...it was definitely a sweet way to finish. Wish more people could have joined but it was extremely last minute :)
Hey there. I asked him if could do that, and he said not right now. One, he has none at the moment, and two, he lives in North Carolina, haha. He said you can purchase individual drinks Here: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/6127/caf-20/Cocaine_Energy_Drink_Can_84_oz_-_The_Legal_Alternative.html I believe that they're illegal to sell in regular stores the US as of 2007. Another recommendation he had is Jolt: http://www.energydrinkoutlet.com/index.php?cur_cat=alph_J&cur_upc=084414200423&page=1&LIST_BY=no&Rnum=118 (and this entire website in general).

I hope you find something you like, sorry I couldn't be more help!
