Mt Martha via Rt 115 Cherry Mtn Trail

Lot plowed and easy access. With trace of powder on top of ice, the lot is very slippery. Used microspikes for whole hike snowshoes unnecessary though we brought them. Nice but limited views with low cloud cover. Seven blowdowns but none required anything more than stepping over, no need to...

    Nansen Ski Jump video

The landing hill is one of the best (depending on your preference) toboggan or sled rides to be had. You can get some great speed.

Avalanche in Huntington Ravine: 3 hurt (Updated Subject line)

I have to admit I agree with your concerns. Perhaps it is nothing more than a choice of words, and an innocent vocabulary blunder, but the description of this as a 'project' is a bit disconcerting.

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

I know it wasn't much of a sit-down true dining experience, but when you needed a handy, good tastin', pastrami grinder with fries after hiking Waumbek, it was nice to rely on the Hometown Market & Grill, which effective Dec 31, 2012 is closed. Just saw it on this weeks online Democrat.

Peak Experiences: Danger, Death, and Daring in the Mountains of the Northeast

I have found this discussion quite interesting. I got the Kindle version yesterday and will get about to reading it at some point, mainly because I will read virtually anything about the Whites. I have read Women with Altitude, and loved it, and I have never even set foot in the Daks (its OK...

This Year's Hiking Season, I am THANKful for....

OK OK true, true, I get it. This is more about, I am thankful perhaps for, a new hiking companion, or a new bit of advice, new trail experiences, anything we can be thankful for when it comes to hiking that we experinced this year. So, let's call it, " So Far This Year, in the World of Hiking...

This Year's Hiking Season, I am THANKful for....

I always thought in past years someone got a thread like this going before, a chance to give thanks for a safe and successful hiking season, tis the THANKful season after all. I mean, hey, we can save the memories and accomplishments for pre- New Year's. Therefore, if its OK, I would like to...

    Maple syrup

Glad to hear Christies is still goin. She was a teacher at our high school too, and me and 2 of my best friends worked in their sugarbush for 3 seasons or so.

    Maple syrup

Over the years I have made maple cakes specifically for the quick, more natural, energy they supply for hiking. When made with an amount of cornmeal they also become less susceptible to "melting" and have a nice consistency for eating, albeit it a bit hard.

    Maple syrup

I get mine from Fuller's in Lancaster NH, but 14 miles from where I grew up. http://www.fullerssugarhouse.com/ It was more fun makin it ourselves back in the day, but their stuff is good. Fortunately my brother gave me some mason jars full from his small homemade batch last year. The best...

I don't know your style and/or tastes, but if you want to go full-bore 'fancy-eatin', the Mountain View Grand has a nice Thanksgiving spread each year.

The Hurricane Exchange or "Brother can you spare a 'D' ?"

Yea, definitely anyone who is a true hiker/backpacker, is already equipped. We had a large account we were doing work on this weekend while everyone else was rampaging the stores. When I stopped to think if we needed anything, it was already Sunday PM, and the answer was 'no', we've already got...

10/25/2012 Mt Jefferson via Castle Ravine and Castle Ridge

This is a great TR, thanks for the effort! I enjoy reading TR's about the Castles because it is one of my faves in the Northern Presi's and has a lot of memories of climbing it as a young lad with family and friends. Especially like your inventory at the end of what equipment you used and didn't...
