Old Man 5-year anniversary on May 3, 2008

I agree, time to remember, RIP Old Man. I still haven't looked up from any viewing angle since it happened. I just keep driving through the Notch with my eyes on the road, which is a good idea anyway.

Mt Pemigewasset via Mt Pemigewasset Trail

Nice hike on a great day! Trail in good shape, no troubles at water crossings. Some mud, trail wet in places, and a little ice of both the crushable type for the first 2/3rds, and just two spots of the slippery kind once near the top. Stinkin Johnnies and Trout Lilies beginning to bloom. Few...

    30 Years and Counting......

30 Years and Counting....(Part 2) In the end, most of the families of rescuers were fortunate. For many, friends and family members were strewn wide and far across the rescue net and were not in the area, save for one. There was one more fatality than there ever should have been, Albert Dow...

    30 Years and Counting......

It is no secret that northern NH, "above the Notches", is one of the best places to raise one's children. At once they have a sense of self and of community. It is with this ultimate background in life that one can teach their children about their own role in life in a precious environment, to...

Hiking footwear recommendations for Kauai trip

Kauai = mud, mud, and mud. But I do concur that the Na Pali Coast Kalalau Trail (entire length) was awesome. We have worn all types of footwear, low-ride hikers, trail runners, and Teva's. All have been useful for varying reasons. Wear trail runners, carry Teva's. If you do the Kalalau Trail...

State of Hawaii Agrees to Pay $15.4 Million to Settle Hiking Death Suit

We have done extensive backcountry hiking on multiple trips to Hawai'i, Kauai, and Maui, and can vouch to the fact that some of these areas are HEAVILY forested and jungle growth is profusive, ledges, steeps, crevices come up on you quick. Its the equivalent of close-in brush fighting. If...

    River Otters in WMNF area?

In the late 70's and into the 80's there were slides they made along the Israel River in Jefferson. Never saw them at work and play, but certainly would have loved to.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

I worked as an instructor at Cannon and Patrol and instructor at Bretton Woods, granted this was mid-late 80's and early 90's. Though that was some time ago, it was still common to encounter snowshoers and a few Nordic skiers heading uphill and using the trails. Back then the unofficial policy...

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Lest we forget, Wildcat now has new owners. Gone are the days of private ownership, which was a bit more friendly and hospitable. New ownership often means new policies.

    Retiring to Maine?

Hey c'mon, the haul over Rt 2, the "main west - east artery" from where I used to live in Jefferson, isn't too bad now that there aren't as many pulp trucks to get stuck behind!:D
