Are you a victim of the Ultra-lite craze?

Ok You are making my point about the word ultralight being marketed and attached to gear that is really not that light at all. 2.6lbs is not ultralight compared to 4lbs, though it is lighter. The SD website describes the Origami Ultralight as a 1 person, 3 season shelter...I didn't really...

Are you a victim of the Ultra-lite craze?

Marketing victims indeed I started out backpacking heavy and quickly changed to lighter stuff(tarps, sneakers, Esbit, etc). Since then, I completely agree that major gear companies and their vendors are marketing the word ultralight to the masses, who do end up as victims of ignorance shaving...

    What hangs from your pack?

I've switched to a pack without external pockets of any kind(gram weenie) and it has me wondering what others here have hanging from their packs and how these things are attached...I'm thinking I would like first aid, water treatment and my map handy and some snacks too I guess. Anyone here...

Do you talk on a cell phone while hiking?

When I'm on call... ...for psychiatric emergencies of my patients, I do have the need to be reached, wherever I am. I have a satellite phone and get great service on the peaks and even in some of the valleys. A necessary evil.

    Southeast Mass folks...

Hiked a secton today Hiked from F. Gilbert Hills to just passed 140 in Foxboro...a short section but really great hiking; would be much better mountain biking. So far I've seen only a couple of sections that couldn't be biked, but I'm a conservative mountain biker. Also, a three-sided...

    Southeast Mass folks...

Anyone know anything about the Warner trail? I mountain-biked some of it in both F. Gilbert Hills and Wrentham State Forest and it is as close akin to NH as I can find locally...there isn't much on the net about it except that spots of the trail have been lost to things like the Wrentham...

Where do you get your gear?

Backpackinglight.com and Prolitegear.com Prolitegear.com doesn't seem that small to me, but BPL.com is small, they have great gear and a cool community concept that I like being a part of and supporting when I can.

    Ice Axe help

Hey Doug... How tall are you? I only ask this because 70cm would be touching the ground for me on a level plain, but I am 5'6"...

    Ice axe practice...

Where is a good place to start practicing self-arrest in the Whites? I was thinking about a good steep ski slope, but I don't think Wildcat wants that...just looking for a place that is steep enough to practice, but generally safe as well. Any ideas? Thanks. I searched the forums already...

    Carrigan in Winter

Blowdown... Earlier in the year, the Hancocks were rife with blowdown, so much so that it took lots of people heading up and down the loop trail to clear most of the trees that were down. I don't know if they are all clear as of yet. I would wonder how the going would be on the Desolation...

    Coffee before a hike

Don't drink it without about 5 equals or 5 heaps of sugar. Caffeine doesn't really affect me, but the sugar does, both on the way up, and on the way down, and the down is mostly why I don't drink it before a hike.

    Backpackinglight Subscription Question

I am... The forums are really slow going...maybe 1 post a day in each section...the articles are cool, but I joined after deciding to buy a bivy from them, and it was going to save me $20 if I joined(I guess the marketing worked), so I joined in my mind for $5. The articles ARE worth that...

Anyone hiking with a torn/repaired ACL?

Here is the final scoop... After hearing a torn ACL from a trainer, and then a torn medial miniscus from a GP, I finally went to an orthopedist who told me, even before looking at the MRI, that I have a severely torn ham string and/or torn calf muscle. Apparently, the tear is just below my...

Anyone hiking with a torn/repaired ACL?

Thanks everyone... Great to hear that people can come back from this...MRI tomorrow. I have already put away my maps and stored most of my gear to try and "brace", no pun intended, for my long off-season. El-bagr...Just went around a guy on the basketball court, bent my knee a regular amount...

Anyone hiking with a torn/repaired ACL?

Recent moves on the basketball court have resulted in at least a partial tear of my left knee's ACL...I'm not quite suicidal, but I'm upset, because this damages my Fall/Winter/Spring? hiking. Trainer friend says I could take pain killers, but I want this to heal and be done with it. Problem...
