Lost Leki poles on Lincoln Woods Trail

I know it is a long shot; but I am hoping someone might have found my "Super Makalu" hiking poles, left by the side of Lincoln Woods Trail, late in the day on August 12. I stopped to leash the dogs, and kept on going. I tried going back to find them, and was unsuccessful. Thanks, Elizabeth

Bondcliff & Bond from Lincoln Woods Aug. 12, 2011

Trails: Out and back via Lincoln Woods, Wilderness, and Bondcliff Trails all in good shape. Third and fourth crossings of Black Brook are dry. First and second are low, but with slippery rocks, so don't get too cocky when crossing. Equipment: Poles helpful to ease the knees on this long...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Thanks! USDA plant website does not show Water Arum documented in Grafton County; but that must be what it is. Also found this last week in an upland swamp (about 1,900 feet in easternmost Lyme): Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Wetland plant Help please! I cannot identify this plant, found in a boggy area adjacent to a wilderness pond in the southeast corner of Lyme, NH on August 9, 2011. Unidentified wetland plant, Little Clark Pond by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr Unidentified wetland plant, Little Clark Pond 2 by...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Thanks, as always, for your corrections. I thought perhaps the leaves were wrong for the berries to be Mountain Ash. Mostly black elderberry I have seen has a flatter-shaped umbel, so I'd go with red also (not unripe black). Next time I see some of the same goldenrods, I'll look more closely...

Franconia Ridge - Lafayette, Lincoln, and Little Haystack - 7/19/20111

I recommend the Shining Rock detour in autumn, when the water is partly frozen. The play of ice and liquid in the sun with fall leaves as a backdrop is well worth seeing. I didn't have a camera with me the last time I was there at that time of year, so no pics.

    the Moats

Great photos, especially the one of the hornets. Only the greatest suffer for their art. Your report and pics put the Moats on my must-do list. P.S. I am also a year-round gaiter fan.

    S, M, & N Carter loop 7/24/2011

Trails: 19 Mile Brook, Carter Dome, Carter Moriah, North Carter, and Imp Trails, with a woods road shortcut to Camp Dodge and a half-mile road walk along Route 16. Conditions: Trails mostly in pretty good shape. Carter Dome and North Carter Trails could use a bit of brushing out in places...

    Looking For Some Ideas

In winter, try cross-country skiing on the flat. Smooth action that is easy on the joints, with no pounding. For balance, the poles give you support. Some years back I took an elderly relative out X-C'ing on a pond. She hobbled terribly until she had her skis on, and then did fine.

    Mt bikes in Wilderness Areas

I could see creating a few places for mountain bikes; but IMO in most places biking and hiking just don't mix very well. I am the maintainer for a local (town) trail that is designed for hiking; but where mountain bikes are allowed. Several times a year I have to go through and take the rocks...

Photoshop- the right amount or too much

Doug, Thanks. I might try going back to the original and playing with the density scale adjustment. I've never worked with that before. Elizabeth

Photoshop- the right amount or too much

Interesting thread. I like seeing more "natural" looking shots; but have certainly been guilty of over-using certain manipulations myself, especially saturation-boosting. I'd have to say, though, that I have saved some otherwise throw-away shots by purposeful over-manipulation. (My shots are...

    boot suggestions appreciated -wide forefoot

Bear Paws happy in Keens I recently purchased mid-range Keen synthetic boots, and have had a similar experience. Finally! HAPPY TOES! I inserted the orthodic from my old toe-crunching Asolos for extra instep support. I would describe my feet as being like bear paws - relatively short...

Good Hike To Do w/ My 9-Year Old Son

Unknown Pond It involves a longish drive, but Unknown Pond tent site from Mill Brook Road (west side) is a fairly easy hike (not too steep, ~ 2.3 miles). You could set up camp there, and then hike Horn with light packs, or even do a loop with a return to the pond for a nice swim. Photos here...

Smarts, up Lambert Ridge, down Ranger Tr. 7/6/2011

Conditions: Lambert Ridge Trail in good shape. Could use some minor brushing out, especially near the summit. The new steps and iron rungs were a very nice addition. Water for dogs somewhat limited, though there was some in the col of the Ridge. We also went to check out the spring 0.2...

Parking tickets issued at Lincoln Woods

I would be surprised if your explanation would hold any sway; but they might decide just to drop it so as not to spend any more time on it. I can not imagine an urban parking fine being excused because you tell them you were "in a hurry" and didn't want to take the time to put money in the...

    Maine Hikers Save A Fawn

Interesting. Intellectually, I would say that they probably should have let nature take its course. If I had been there, though, I think I probably would have done the same thing. The horror of the scene and the instinct to save a helpless baby animal would be too strong. Arguably, since...

Wildcats via ski trails with dogs?

Water for dogs on Wildcat Ridge Interesting background on the Aqueduct Path. As for water for dogs on Wildcat Ridge, we found plenty, probably due to how wet this season has been so far. Here, between Wildcat B and C: 11. At the Col Wash by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr Going down the...
