I like counterclockwise. As far as getting ready goes -- running is good, the more hills the better, and the longer the better. 3-5 miles / 3-4 times a week is good ... if that's where you are by mid-April, then you should be able to get your weekly long run into the 10 mile range by mid June...

Congratulations! Hard day to be up there. My kids and I spent the afternoon skiing at the resort, and it was blowing down there. Tough finish, way to earn it!

Agreed. Additionally, you can lop off all but ~200 feet of the road walk; from the Camp Dodge driveway just before it curves to the left and crosses a little culvert bridge, there is a trail into the woods heading in the direction of the 19MB trailhead. Follow that for 1/3 mile or so; it...

I would think trips in the Pemi, Dry River, Rocky Branch, or Wild River country could give you what you're after. Backpacking with a float tube could be a real drag, IMO. I have done long (week-plus) trips with a two-piece fly rod, though. Easy enough, just strap it to your pack like...

^^ Hope you have a nice day for Cabot. We hiked it late on a gem of a Saturday in January -- wicked windy at first, but settled into an amazing afternoon with skies so clear the blue was nearly purple, and we walked out the last mile by the light of the stars alone.

Moriah or a 19 Mile > CMT > Imp (south) loop on Saturday if it isn't totally rainy; next weekend whichever of those we don't do; finish our 48 on Carrigain before the winter is out. That's the plan at this point ...

I'm not sure I'd recommend either of those routes for a true novice nordic skier. Also, probably a good idea to mess around with the dynamics of pulling a pulk on snowshoes, at least a little, before you go for a long tug on skis. You're talking about some fairly lengthy trips, on uneven...

Yowzers ... we're going in, but expecting it to be tough. Current flight plan is to try to make it to camp near where the 'whack intersects the Iso trail, and head up for the summit Tuesday morning early. Hoping for the best ... Greg, hope to see you out there!
