Who's Your Favorite Hiking Partner and Why?

Daughter! I love hiking with my wife, my son, my mom, my mother-in-law, and a wide variety of friends and acquaintances -- as well as going alone -- but watching my daughter go from baby-in-backpack to a comparatively equal and always-enthusiastic four-season, all-terrain partner-in-crime has...

    Ankle Roll

And a real severe one can take months and months to really heal ... I hiked off Mt. Colden on a wrecked and swollen ankle (and five ibuprofens) six years ago, and it ached at night for like half a year. The good news is, whatever it is I snapped in there doesn't seem to even exist anymore, as I...

Isolation and Impressive Storm Damage, 11/23/2012

Ugh, wow. That one's on our near-term to-do list. Thanks for the heads up.

    Long Trail thru-hike

Wow, man. Tillotson to Shooting Star is a tough day, even after 200+ miles of toughening up. Favorite line: "Brandon Gap to Whiteface was kind of slippery." That's, like, 100 miles ... but that's the LT, no foolin'! Congrats on your trek & thanks for posting this cool report.

Great report, and what an unusual gift last week's weather was.

    Hiking The Tripyramids - 10/16/2012

Nice report & pics. We did the same trip as you a few weeks ago, minus the trip to the falls.

Jefferson, Adams & Madison for 38-39-40, Fri 10/26/12

So ... I know I don't post much, but this hike felt like a pretty big deal. It seems like yesterday Isidora was climbing her first big mountains, and here we are a few years later closing in on 48. I've been holding at 46 (just Isolation & Carrigain left) so we can finish together. We're both...

Hell Brook>Adam's Apple>Chin>Cliff>Lakeview>Canyon>North>Extension>P rofanity>LT All trails well kept: brushed, drained, and free of blowdown. Slow going out there ... lotta squirming through cracks and holes, up and down over collosal boulders. Eight miles = 12 hours

Holy crap. That looks really scary.

Would a "summer pulke" be anti-LNT?

I don't think I'd bother in the Northeast, between the regulations and the many trails where it would be impractical -- basically anything steep, rocky, or deeply wet. Having said that, it's a great idea. It would be brilliant anywhere that trail uses old roadbeds or rail beds, i.e. Pemi...

The *real* reason not to leave your pack at the col

That's a wonderful picture, but I'm sorry about your pack. I saw another hiker's pack mauled by one of them at Times Square in the Santanonis a few years ago. Those things are all about business.

    Worcester Mtn. 3/6/12

Lower trail is pretty chopped up with moose tracks; the holes abate after about 3/4 mile in. Nice snowshoe track now leads to the summit snowfields (actually, to the summit, but that will only last until the next wind). Deep snow up there ... Equipment used: snowshoes & poles, the whole way...

    Bindings for Koflach Expe

Silvretta 404's or 500's will probably work. Fritschi FT88's, though not elegant, will work, too.

    Trail on Dewey Mt. Vermont

It may come straight up from the Trout Club. I doubt if the lower end would be open to the public, though. There could also be access from Skytop Ridge -- there's a busy network of ski trails over there.

    Hunger (Waterbury Tr) 2/4/12

Snow over hard ice, 2-4" at the bottom to ~1' closer to the top. Traction aids essential. We were on full crampons and it was not overkill. Snowshoes not needed.

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

I've often daydreamed about something like this. There are areas of the LT that get regular, even busy, winter use -- but more areas that stay very quiet. The trail can be totally elusive, especially at higher elevations. I think it would (will!) be quite an undertaking.

what do you wear for pants?

Yeah, I'd say so. They're overkill for summer. For rain protection in the warmer months lately I use White Sierra Trabagon pants (<$20 at STP with a coupon, very light, no-frills but effective) that weigh about a third what the Takus do, and take up less than half the space. About the...

what do you wear for pants?

I use REI taku pants over light, medium, or heavy synth long underwear depending on temps & expected levels of exertion. The pants are wonderfully comfortable, waterproof, breathable and stretchy -- but the fabric is rather delicate and after four winters they are becoming a patchwork of...
