    snowshoes

Thought I had posted this, but can't find it, so... What to look for in snowshoes (beginner). Type, size... With all the snow here thus year, I can actually use them in the neighborhood. Would do only short day hikes to start. Are Hike boots ok (Vasque leather), or are winter boots...

report of a hiker killed by a black bear in NJ

Given the limited - if any - experience most have with a bear confrontation, this is a dice roll, at best, in the time frame prescribed.

    Should I Hike Solo?

No. I used to do it in the ADKs, but no more. You can't plan for the dice roll / long tail event. Look what happened to Geraldine Largay.

report of a hiker killed by a black bear in NJ

I wouldn't call W Milford 'overpopulated'. Once you get across the street from the lake, you're in the forest. Here's another NJ bear from yesterday (9/30). Bear walks thru Ridgewood across the street from Elementary school. Climbs tree after taking a rubber bullet in the butt from the cops...

Cool and dry. NYC TV weathermen constantly commenting on the fact that there were only 3-4 90 degree days this year.

    EMS sage

Found that the EMS on Rt 17 in Paramus, NJ, closed very recently. I haven't cruised that section of Rt 17 in a while, but it must have been within last month (Labor Day?). Remember that there was a post on new EMS mgmt, etc, and that budget cuts were hovering. Crowd was always thin there...

any problems with a yard Woodchuck?

We have one that patrols the neighborhood. You can set your clock by it. It must be well fed as it's the size of a pig.

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

How many of these places are dependable for a world class case of the trots? My wife sees some of those north area restaurants as 'risky'.

report of a hiker killed by a black bear in NJ

W Milford has more bears than dogs, and 30 air miles from the GW bridge. Part of the issue is that NYers have moved from the city to the NJ rural burbs in past 20 years. Then they discover that bears are really in their town, and actually walk thru their yards. So, they put 'goodies' on the...
