    Missing hiker

Don't see t thread on Gerry Largay who disappeared while hiking near Spaulding last summer. Must be deleted. Anyhow, by chance, just saw the end of a N Woods Law episode apparently dedicated to the search. People, dogs, helos, etc. Still looking.

60% Of NH Yearling Moose Population Dying

I haven't seen any REAL data that proposes 'climate change' is real. Even the IPCC reports on temperature change conclude any measurable differences are 'not statistically meaningful'. 'Climate' scale is measured in 100 year increments, so those with 10 year data are 90 years off a single data...

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

While I have not seen one, I've heard very LOUD woodknocks (Ka-LUNK) coming from steep grades approaching tree line. Not sure how someone could, or even would want to, get in there, never mind swing an axe / bat / stick. Also several 'tanks' rolling thru the woods - but without the engine...

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

Hmmm. Easy on the BF criticism. Ya never know. I'll bet that 90% of this audience blasts thru the woods too fast to notice anyhow. Wanna trade stories over 40 years???

    Day hike ideas in Colorado

Did Mt of Holy Cross 2 years ago. Nice hike, great views, lots of vertical, but even with 2 other hikers, it was VERY creepy. Many stories about hikers disappearing on trail never to be seen again. Even local bars and eq shops willing to expand on that, etc. Googled, and is true. How...

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

Thanks. Seems the theme has changed from 'Tall Trees, Tough Men' or 'Peak Experiences' of the recent past.

    Kelty Backpacks

I'm a bit disappointed in how low on back my Redwing sits. Perhaps needs more tweeking. Q on the K pack-frame. I have a mountaineer frame bought 30 years ago. The newer frames have a nice padded nylon hip belt, etc. Big upgrade to the simple canvas belt I have. Local stores (Campmor, EMS)...

    Kelty Backpacks

Redwing is great. But still prefer to have it sit higher on back. Also have an OLD Moutaineer frame with an old A4 pack. Stores do not carry waist belt upgrades.

    VT 4k suggestions

ok, we did the easier way - from the East - except CH. Mansfield. Up LT going N-S. Exit on Haselton Trail just below the Nose in woods between N & S parts of ski area to road. Took longer down than up! Did not enjoy decent after the nice ridge walk. Not especially well traveled trail...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

My prayers are with the family, and hope this ends well. The book just documents that some people just disappear. Could happen to you or me. No lunacy here. Hiked that part of trail ~3 years ago in mid week. I remember it as a very alone / isolated experience - like many Maine trails. Glad...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

This rekindles thoughts of Dave Paulides' book, Missing 411, which documents people who mysteriously disappear, and despite intensive S&R, are usually never seen again. Many are hikers, both alone, or in large groups, in or near the 'woods'. One of his 'clusters' stretches from the Kancamagus...

    Waterville Valley Early Diner?

So any good restaurants in WV? After all, with a ski area and some lodging, there MUST be a good restaurant there? Maybe not?

    Worst bug encounters ever

That was on a w/e before July 4th in the 70s at Lafayette Place c/g when the no-see-ums flew thru the tent netting w/o breaking formation and transported us to another universe. Then again, it could have been an UFO abduction.
