What electronics don't belong in Wilderness areas?

Alright, I don't think that anyone should dictate what can and can't be brought into the wilderness, electronic wise, as long as it doesn't bother others. HOWEVER, I can't believe the number of people I see hiking with ipods! It absolutely drives me nuts. Seiously, what's the point? I...

    Canyonlands for a day

Thanks for the input! I guess I should have mentioned that we're going to spend Wednesday night at Canyonlands and then head to AZ in the morning. I'll probably just print this thread and we can discuss in the car. Thanks again

    Canyonlands for a day

On Tuesday a friend and I are leaving to drive to Arizona. We've got quite the trip mapped out, camping reservations made along the way and a friend in the Tetons to show us around. What we don't have, is a plan for Canyonlands. We'll be in Arches the two nights before, mostly because I...

    Transition to long distance hikes

Pacing- I recently learned the "art" of pacing oneself. I used to think that to go long distances you had to hike as fast as you could, but that isn't the whole truth. You can go really f-ing slow and still make good time- because you can keep going, and you still feel good. It's all about...

Any Quinoa eaters/fans/gourmands out there ?

I just had some keenwa (sp?) on the trip I just returned from. It was okay, tasted a lot like bean sprouts, or birdseed. We cooked it with some dried vegetable soup mix and motzerella cheese. Some others didn't cook it long enough and then added brown sugar. They wound up choking it down out...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

Well, it's likely "inexperienced" people who leave trash and piles of TP. If they want/need pit toilets and trash cans then they need to go somewhere else besides a wilderness area and learn about how to act. Removing the blazes is not the issue in total, I expect it has some to do with...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

Holy crap, I thought this one was already beaten to death! I like to kick dead horses, so... How long do you think it would take for those blazes to fade away? 10 years, minimum? While I really don't think that blaze removal will ultimately result in lots of people getting lost, I do think...

    Survivorman or Man vs Wild??

"If you found yourself up here, you would NOT want to go down this way. It would take hours to bushwhack around though, so I'll show you how to downclimb this 300 foot slippery, raging waterfall." Sweet! If I ever find myself in that situation I'll know how to... spend hours bushwhacking...

    Sigg bottles for winter

I'm thinking about getting a couple of those fancy-shmancy Sigg bottles to replace my aging Nalgenes. Has anyone used these in winter? Are my lips going to be instantly frostbitten when they touch the alluminum bottle? Will my water freeze faster than in a lexan bottle?

    Hikers Dream Car

It's not always just about the car, you've gotta know how to negotiate those bumps and mud holes. My first two cars were little Hondas and I took them everywhere. You just have to go a little slower.

Sad News For Everest (Chinese building a road to base camp)

I believe it is none other than the ever-popular Into thin air which describes clients not knowing how to use crampons and one client in particular whose boots and crampons were not even compatible. We also need to consider what is improvement and progress for other countries. Who are we to...

Small gifts for kids who hike/backpack?

I've got two pairs of cheap (small) binoculars that were ten bucks each. Also, I recently saw (while getting a gift for a non-hiking four year old) at Target, those red fold-up binolculars with a compass in the middle. I had one as a kid and LOVED it. I think I actually had two of them.

Best post-hike restaurants, bars, pizzerias, ice cream, etc.

Heck yeah! Used to always go there for the chili bread bowls and a pint of oatmeal stout! Best post-hike meal ever! Happy hour until five means half off appetizers and beer making that bill about 5 bucks.

    What in Blazes?

I seriously doubt that logging was taking place in current federally designated wilderness areas. They don't even allow logging directly adjacent to those areas, a buffer is required. However, the management of individual wilderness areas is a little different by region and forest. Here...

Ha! This is what I was thinking for my thesis!

    What in Blazes?

TCD, that's interesting about NY. That's the DEC though, not the Forest Service. I'd be interested to know how their laws and regs work and/or how different they are from the feds. As far as "forcing manmade wilderness where wilderness was 300 years ago", it's really the same story...

    What in Blazes?

The Forest Service maintains land for "many uses", which in turn makes different designations and different management practices. Wilderness is always very controversial because people have a hard time underdstanding why you wouldn't do ANYTHING to a tract of land. There are people who wish...
