    Mahoosuc Traverse - 8/10/14

So far, so good although symptoms may take 3+ weeks to appear. BTW, I thought of another challenging 100 miler: West-to-east Mahoosuc Traverse... followed by the Grafton Loop clockwise... followed by an east-to-west Mahoosuc Traverse. It's almost exactly 100 miles and I think easier than...

Sharing the woods with black bears

Forget black bears. The critter we all should be afraid of in these parts is the mama spruce grouse. I have been charged more times than I can remember and have heard stories of actual attacks. These flippin' birds freak me out more than any bear!

Found tent, tarp & cooler at 3 Ponds Shelter

Date: 8.16.14 Checked out 3 Ponds Shelter while doing the loop. Somebody has abandoned a nice, brand new looking tarp, a large tent (sans poles), and a nice full size cooler that has wheels so you can roll it down 3 Ponds Trail :D The cooler contained only one large (32 oz!) bottle of Heinz...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

A few guesses: “I am losing precious days... I am learning nothing in this trivial world of men. I must break away and get out into the mountains to learn the news.” "Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. All other travel is mere...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

(Responding to Post #56) I get your point: the numbers will never match those of the NE100/NH100 lists. However, when I completed those lists over 20 years ago (!), there were no discernible herd paths to peaks like Vose Spur or any of the other bushwhacks that I can remember except for Nancy...

    Killington via ski area

Date: Tuesday, 8/12/14 Trails: "C" (Warbler) up, "E" (Wildlands) down Conditions: "C" was a gravel access road with some loose rock. "E" was more of a singletrack route through the forest that crossed a 3 or 4 ski trails. Trail was in pretty good shape, with no muddy sections. Some of...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Robert Redford is currently working on his adaptation of Bill Bryson's A Walk In the Woods, starring (who else?) Robert Redford and Nick Nolte as Katz. Wonder what effect this will have on the (already too high IMO) Appalachian Trail numbers...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Also a great time to hit obscure, lightly traveled redlining trails. Have been enjoying the solitude lately. :)

    Bear Canister/Bag Recommendations

We have a Bearikade Weekender - www.wild-ideas.net - which was purchased mainly for Sierra hiking, where bear cans are required. Freakishly smart bears out there! It's pricey but I believe still the lightest can on the market. We have been very pleased with it.

    Mt Ellen - 8/07/14

Trails: Stark Mtn Trail, Bunny Cutoff, Long Trail Comments: Decided to take our chances on a not great forecast day and head up Mad River Glen's Stark Mtn Trail for something different. There is a trail map on the Mad River website. Stark Mtn Trail is a utility road that pops you out on...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

Secret societies? Homophobic slurs? Death threats?? Sad. Who knew bushwhacking could sound like a bad B movie? Think I'm happier having quit after the NH 100 Highest 20+ years ago.

To GRID or not to GRID that is the question...

Roadtripper, I had to giggle while reading your list. Somehow I managed to complete the grid and visit each of the places you mention above, except for the last one. Haven't quite visited ALL the national parks and monuments (and probably never will). The grid was completed before seeing most...
