    Cohos Trail End to End

I spent 6 full and 3 partial days this summer hiking the length of the Cohos Trail (June 18-21 and 24, August 19-22). The trail conditions were better than I'd expected, and it was a wonderful experience overall. There is a rather lengthy report on my blog www.runsuerun.blogspot.com for...

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

Leave No Trace. Therein lies the irony. The AMC is being hypocritical. There are already 8 huts in the White Mtns, plus Joe Dodge Lodge and the Highland Center, more than enough accommodation choices for "those people" (sic). I don't think it's snobbish to reject the building of a new hut...

    Thoughts on Energy Gel's

Used to use them a lot in ultrarunning events because of their easy digestability and because I have always gotten them free, first as a sponsored athlete and then because my husband puts on an event (plug: Coyote Scramble on Kingdom Trails in VT, a very fun time that is not a race!:) ). I...

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

This is a very well written blog post on point. It is written by a former hutwoman. Similar to the point I was trying to make but thankfully far better articulated! http://granitebunny.blogspot.com/2015/08/on-recreation-and-conservation.html?spref=fb&m=1

Trail Maintenance in the White Mountains

Great resource. Thanks Roadtripper! >>"75 AT miles among other trails..." DOC needs to update their site: As of autumn 2011, the Green Mtn Club is responsible for all AT maintenance in Vermont, from MA to the CT River. See http://www.greenmountainclub.org/news.php?id=281

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

I definitely do not support the building of yet another AMC $100+ hotel in the White Mountains. I agree with Sierra: enough is enough. The AMC's mission statement from their website: "The Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains...

North Percy via Underhill/West Side Trail, 7/29/15

It had been many years since I last climbed this spectacular route with Neighbor Dave and The Human Moose. The West Side Trail was originally laid out by White Mtn legends Robert and Miriam Underhill. I wish it were still an official trail, but alas it is not, the powers that be having deemed...

Poop in the campsite: a tragedy in four acts

In the Whitney Zone we used these, issued along with your permit: http://www.mount-whitney.com/hiking_backpacking_mt_whitney/mt_whitney_wag_bags.php We were given a similar kit on Shasta. That one had the added entertainment value of a bullseye to help in aim. :D And on Denali we used the...

    Long Trail Thru-hike, 7/15-24

Thru-hiked the Long Trail from Mass to Canada 7/15 - 7/24/15. With all the rain, the Trail is pretty muddy this year! The new Winooski River Bridge and trail relo opened a little over a month ago and are both very nice. Full report...

    Mahoosuc Traverse 7/05/15

Trails: Centennial, Mahoosuc, Old Speck Trail conditions: Major blowdowns (many!) have been cleared--impressive work there! A few bog bridges are in serious need of replacement. With the rainy June, probably a bit more mud than usual but overall pretty much status quo for the rugged...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

A strange twist, indeed, and a fascinating read. Thank you for posting, Jean Miller. Could there really be any connection? Back in the early '90s a group of us bushwhacked Saddleback's North Horn to Potato Nubble, a 3 k'er. After summitting the latter, we continued north to the road along...

East Branch / Slippery Brook Roads ?

All the way to Eastman Mtn and back, plus Mtn Pond Loop was about 20 miles. See http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?54723-Eastman-Mtn-Mountain-Pond-Loop-10-30-14&p=417326#post417326 FYI Mtn Pond Loop is pretty rocky and rough, not as easy as a quick glance at the map would suggest.

East Branch / Slippery Brook Roads ?

Just spoke with someone at the Saco Ranger District who reported "Hopefully by the end of the summer Slippery Brook Road will be reopened, but they are still working on it." When I was finishing up redlining last fall, I walked the road in order to get the southern end of SBT and Mtn Pond Loop...

    Dog on Caps Ridge

While I do not have a dog companion now, my previous dogs Sam and Jackson were seasoned, though nonwinter, peakbaggers. Generally I shied away from doing slide trails, scrambles, and endless rough rock with them. We climbed each of the northern Presies individually, for example. I have...

Best Short Quick Easy Hikes In NH

The stroll to Sawyer Pond is quite nice. I took my nonhiker mother there a few years back, and she enjoyed it. Second the Pondicherry recommendation, although the mosquitoes can be crazy fierce there! BTW, I wouldn't consider the trail to Lonesome Lake as flat!

The length of Rhode Island on The North South Trail, 4/23-4/27/15

Billy, April was the perfect time to hike in RI. There was no snow and we were treated to the very earliest of spring flowers blooming. It has been a lot of fun finding trails in each of the States and hiking (or running) some of the more obscure long-distance trails out there. Still unsure...
