    Winter Bivy Thread

Scott, I had the old Flashlight before the Clip version. I took it bike touring in New Zealand in the mid 80's. A venerable design. Two of us were in it in a bad storm at a campground and the manager took pity on us and got us one of the little cabins he had. Off topic, but btw, if you ever...

    Winter Bivy Thread

Raven, I had my 20F down bag and an MEC overbag stuffed into mine. What is a pain is climbing into the thing, then trying to zip up the side zips on the two bags. With just one bag, it is much easier. However, I think that in an emergency, that won't matter as much as just keeping dry. My...

    Winter Bivy Thread

Raven, you may find the Winter Bivy a bit of a tight fit for a big winter bag. I think they should have made it a big wider. The other thing is that since it doesn't have any mesh on it, you probably won't want to zip it all the way shut, so you can breathe without getting condensation in it.

    Winter Bivy Thread

Raven, I think I have what you have. Mine is the Bibler Winter Bivy made out of Epic. it is black. It is nothing more than a bag with cross zipper on it-no hooped pole, no nothing, just a bag. It weighs 8 oz. BD has a replacement for it called the Twilight. It is a lime green color and is made...

Cool camera...not so good for hiking

That camera is an 8x10 Dierdorff field camera. My ex had the 5x7 version with a 4x5 reduction back for it back in the early 70's. She may still have it. We used it for scenic b&w work. She had a convertible Goertz Golden Dagor 210 lens for it as I recall. You could unscrew the back element of...

    winter sleeping bag

Check these out- http://www.integraldesigns.com/product_detail.cfm?id=717&CFID=2233026&CFTOKEN=61450496 They make a "broad fit" that is bigger than most others I have seen online. No personal experience-just looking at the specs. I hear good things about ID. For more than a grand, it better be...

    Mount Hood guides

I agree with Chip. When I took my mountaineering course in NZ years ago, I had to learn all of the basics except a couple of knots I already knew. Learning to construct a Z pulley takes time, especially learning how to do it when you are holding someone at the end of the rope, so that the rope...

    Martina Navratilova.....

I'm not a doctor, but from personal experience, Doug is right. When I lived in La Paz, some people would get off the plane and be fine, while others would pass out after a few minutes of just standing or walking around. It seemed to be random. The airport is at 13.5K ft., so that is pretty high...

    Martina Navratilova.....

She is lucky. When I had it, I was fortunate that I wasn't in the boonies, but at home in a big city, so it was just a matter of my folks driving me to the clinic where I stayed for about a week or so hooked up to oxygen and an IV. In case you are wondering, I was at 11.5K ft. and had just...

Joshua Tree? No, not the album!

Doesn't look like much snow at Mt.San Jacinto yet. I was there in Feb. and there was a lot of snow-I was on skis, but saw a few snowshoers as well. http://www.pstramway.com/ The site has a webcam setup, plus weather. Mt. Baldy is open for skiing, but not sure about the conditions- doesn't look...

    Rain pants vs. Ski pants???

I have Marmot Precips which I have worn in Yosemite skiing and snowshoeing. They are full zip, so easy to put on or off with boots on and easy to make big vents by zipping them down part way or up part way, depending on the weather-I usually have gaiters on, so I zip mine from the top down. I...

    60CSx battery lifetimes

I've got a 76CSx, which I understand is similar electronically to the 60CSx. No experience with lithium batteries, but I have used the Eneloop 2000 mah rechargeable batteries made by Sanyo, the same ones Doug has. Mine came in a kit with a charger and batteries, both AA and AAA. They work great...

    Recommended GPS?

When I bought my used 76CSx, the owner had bought an extra card for it and I got some free topo maps from www.gpsfiledepot.com That site has a lot of free maps. I downloaded one of part of SoCal that I wanted, but they have many more covering much of the US. I was able to download the map...

Three hikers missing on Mt. Whitney

The other two hikers walked out safe. Took a long route to avoid bad weather- http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_16409078?nclick_check=1 One thing Ed Viesturs said in his book, as I recall, was that he knew when to turn around and come back down, that summiting wasn't as important as...

Three hikers missing on Mt. Whitney

    Hardshell Jacket Suggestions

What? You're not wearing a Swannie Bushshirt? I should have bought one when I was there back in the 80's. Not high tech, but pretty bombproof from what I saw. http://www.swanndri.co.nz/Mens/Bushshirts.htm

Hiking Forums for Washington State, British Columbia, & Other Western Areas

Try www.clubtread.com It's mostly BC, but has a Washington board, too. Here's another one similar to VFTT- http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/index.php?sid=489eb43d7e8211be7db8719a93b103f5 There are others-just Google for Pacific Northwest hiking or similar terms

    Best hand warmers

Kevin, I remember seeing one of those a long time ago. The one I saw used lighter fluid, but I can't remember exactly how it worked. It was kind of like an enclosed Zippo lighter. As far as the "cheating" argument, I think that's nonsense. We all use something artificial to our advantage-the...

    Best hand warmers

I have a pair of gloves and insoles made by this company- www.heatfactory.com. The insoles are licensed from Superfeet and there is a slot under the ball of the foot for either a small foam filler piece or a chemical warmer pack. The gloves have a small zippered compartment for a similar pack...

Climbing/hiking with Mobile Devices – Should It Be Required?

There is a faulty assumption in the equation Brian sets out-not by him, but by those who assume that having a phone or GPS will save them. First of all, in places like Yosemite, there isn't any coverage in most of the park unless you have a Satphone or real shortwave radio (something more...
