Whiteface Memorial Highway - Ski Conditions

Solid advice, bignslow. Thanks for that. Had already been thinking about a more suitable backpack than the massive ones I normally carry for hiking/mountaineering (75 L is my small pack lol), but am probably geared out at this point for the year after spending a small fortune on the...

Whiteface Memorial Highway - Ski Conditions

Thanks guys. I’m pretty stoked about trying them out (not sure if saying “stoked” is allowable after 50, but whatever :D). Anyway, I’m a very solid downhill resort skier but have never done cross country or backcountry skiing. So for this season, I just want to get the hang of uphill skiing...

Thanks TCD! Was unfamiliar with that website but now have it bookmarked.

Whiteface Memorial Highway - Ski Conditions

Anyone here been up it this season or have good intel on conditions? Snow conditions at Whiteface Mountain ski resort suggest the road is probably not yet good skiing. Got my first pair of Alpine Touring skis for XMas and the boots are arriving today. For my ultimate planned use, some of the...

Proposed $5 entrance fee for Mt Washington Summit Building

If the verbiage is changed from “entrance fee” to “fine,” then I’m totally cool with it. :p

TY Gagne's new book is out (Spoiler Alert!)

One of the things that made the Matrosova book so good, IMO, is that she had such a compelling personality. Having said that, I did order Gagne’s follow-up after I saw sierra’s post. Looking forward to reading it. Always lessons to be learned from these kinds of books.

Katahdin - #2 hike in the world

Just for fun, during my most recent Baxter State Park trip, I went back in my mind and counted all of my lifetime trips to BSP. Was a big gap from 1996 to 2012, but I’ve been making up for lost time since then. September 1996 - On consecutive days, I hiked Baxter Peak and Hamlin Ridge via the...

Katahdin - #2 hike in the world

But at what point does a hike become a scramble ... or a climb? As awesome as it is, Katahdin, by any route, is safely in the “hike” category. As far as outdoors stuff goes, few things irk me more than downgrading an obvious climb or mountaineering objective to a hike. For example ... “Did...

Katahdin - #2 hike in the world

Or so says National Geographic. These things, of course, are arbitrary but still kind of cool. Revisited Baxter Peak this summer for the first time since ‘96. :) https://wgme.com/news/local/katahdin-named-one-of-the-best-hikes-in-the-world

Alpine Skiing Under Travel Restrictions - How?

So my 11-year-old daughter and I love to ski at Catamount, which is literally on the NY-Mass border. Some trails are in NY and some trails are in Massachusetts. It is part of the “I love to ski NY” program but the little tavern where we grab lunch for wings and “no more than one beer at a time...

Mass just added NH and Maine to the travel restrictions list

When it comes to these often arbitrary edicts as they relate to travel, there is a substantial difference between something that comes down from your own state and something that comes down from a state to which you may want to travel. As I mentioned in the NH mask thread, I went for a hike in...

    NH Mask Mandate in Effect

As a hiker just trying to enjoy the woods and hills, this whole thing just gets weirder by the day. Been spending a lot of time doing mostly obscure hikes in Vermont this year, but have also been to Baxter a couple of times and my most recent hike was Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire. Due to...

Any NE p2k finishers out there?

Congrats, Spencer! Very cool. Added Putnam Mountain, VT to my tally yesterday. Cold Hollow Mountains HP is my last in Vermont. The others are scattered around NH and Maine.

Any NE p2k finishers out there?

^^^ Yes. Fire Tower hike. Did that one something like 18 years ago as part of the Adirondacks/Catskills Fire Tower challenge.

Any NE p2k finishers out there?

So I finished off the Vermont County highpoints including East and Signal as a minor project this summer and then went and hiked the Traveler Loop a few weeks ago just because it had been on my bucket list for awhile. Got to wondering how many of the Northeast P2K peaks I was up to and found I...

    Foot Stuff Podcast

Great review of this awesome Podcast in today’s Albany Times Union. Been listening to it regularly since earlier this year after internet friend “Pockets” (AKA The Mayor of Albany) brought it to my attention. Even got a couple of shout-outs from the crew after my Mount Shasta climb in June and...

    The Movie “Dirtbag”

Well, he certainly was one of a kind. A person to be admired although not necessarily emulated. Tough nut. Saw the flick, know his history, admire his life. The world needs people like him.

WiFi and Food Trucks in National Parks?

I suspect some here probably remember but there used to be a couple of food trucks that did a good business on the Route 73 corridor between Northway Exit 30 and Keene, NY. One operated right off the exit at that pull-off right by the spring and the food was absolutely awesome!! A retired NYC...
