    Messner or Viesturs

^^^^ This is exactly correct. I remember following Viesturs closely when he was chasing the 8K meter peaks and trying to become the first American to summit all 14. His standard was high and he endured criticism for his Shishapangma “turn around” (as noted in the article skiguy linked) so he...

State Highpointers Konvention - Rapid City, SD - July 17th to 20th, 2024

Have lined up noted Black Hills author and historian Paul Horsted to be the keynote speaker at our banquet. Pretty stoked about this. Books by Paul Horsted

    Messner or Viesturs

Interesting little article. The Guinness Book of World Records has stripped Reinhold Messner of his status as being the first to summit all 14 8000 meter peaks based on the alleged location of the true summit of Annapurna. Lots of other folks weren’t there either. Steady Ed is now the man or...

Buck Mountain, Long Lake (Fire Tower)

I got there around 7:30 AM yesterday (a Saturday for future reference) and there was just one other car in the massive lot. I passed the lone female hiker about 1/3 of the way up and had the trail all to myself the rest of the way. While on the tower platform, a group of three men (whose...

Saturday the 30th is looking pretty good both in terms of weather and my personal schedule. But a lot can change in 7 days. LOL.

State Highpointers Konvention - Rapid City, SD - July 17th to 20th, 2024

Welcome to my thread! And no, I’m not just regurgitating info from the internet. I, Puma concolor, will be the host of the 2024 State Highpointers Konvention to be held in Rapid City, South Dakota from 7/17 to 7/20 of next year. Fresh back from a super awesome scouting trip to the Black Hills...

    Wittenberg Rescue

Cool Facebook post from the NYS DEC from a rescue on Wittenberg Mountain in the Catskills this week. It’s a 3500 Club peak. Still think of that famous call in the final seconds of the 1983 National Championship basketball game every time I see or hear the name of that peak. Wittenberg!

    NE111, first finishers?

So James W.F. Collins of Beverly, MA became the first winter completer atop Panther Peak in the Adirondacks on March 10, 1973. He had previously completed his all season round of the 111 on South Crocker, Maine on March 1st, 1970 and is the 28th overall completer. Dorothy Myer of South...

Yes. Will add to the thread in a few hours. Away from the roster, ATM Anything specific you’d like to know?
  15. Puma concolor

    NE111, first finishers?

^^^^^ Pretty much. The first completer of the 80s was #92 overall while the first completer of the 90s was #176 overall. I was #317 in 1997 and was the last person listed in the 17th edition shown above.

    NE111, first finishers?

^^^^ Just edited the above post. Had the wrong finishing peak. The McKenzies did Hunter and Slide on 5/29 and 5/30/1948; finished the 46Rs on Wright on 8/7/48 and the 111 on Passaconoway on 8/13/48. Source attached.

    NE111, first finishers?

    J. Daniel McKenzie and Lillian G. McKenzie of Boulder, Colorado became the first 111ers on August 13th, 1948 atop Passaconoway in the White Mountains. No one else would attain this feat until Thomas W. Kensler of Cambridge, Massachusetts finished them atop Mansfield on August 3rd, 1964. I hope...

Solo hiking a badge of honor?

I completed the Northeast 115 solo. LOL. Seriously though, I got into solo hiking in the early 90s while working and living in the Adirondack High Peaks and generally had weekdays off. Had been big into pickup basketball games at the time but there wasn’t a lot of hoops action to be found on a...

    Sleeping bag age?

I have a minus 25 Western Mountaineering “Puma” bag (because, of course) that I bought in advance of my 2015 climb of Denali. Also used for Rainier V2.0 in 2016 and Shasta in 2019. Way more bag than I’ll likely ever need for anything else at this point, but I’m gonna use it every chance I get...
