Lazy Summer Day on the Basha Kill

I live within carrying distance of that launch and know well the shallow section you're talking about. For other area places, one or both of these guides might be useful: http://www.blackdomepress.com/books/kayakguide.html...

Lazy Summer Day on the Basha Kill

Definitely. I actually thought of you since I know you're getting into paddling more and it wouldn't be a huge drive (or maybe a "less huge" drive :o ). I also want to get back there in the fall, so lets keep that in mind. The place must explode with colors since there is a good variety of...

    Wright, Algonquin, Iroquois

The loop including Avalanche is outstanding-I've done it once in each direction. I found it easier climbing up the trail from Avalanche and coming back out over Algonquin. Avalanche Pass and Lake taken together make up one of the most scenic areas in the high peaks, IMO. Iroquois is considered...

I hiked the Pemi Loop, turned around, and tried to do it again

That's a terrific read, that report. My favorite things about are the ridge at night, and the hallucinations. The whole thing of pushing oneself so hard that you are actually seeing things is interesting. Sort of a "vision quest" quality to it. Matt

    The SUMMER flower thread

Thanks to both of you. I believe you're right-they fit the description to a tee. I changed the labels. Matt

Lazy Summer Day on the Basha Kill

So I finally got out paddling at the Basha Kill wetland, which is only about 30 miles away from my home, now that I know the better way to drive there. I drove south through Ulster County and crossed the Shawangunk Ridge at a much lower point than I am used to. On some of the back roads, I was...

    The SUMMER flower thread

Some more from a paddle I did today on the Basha Kill wetland in Sullivan County, NY. Swamp Honeysuckle, a lovely white azalea: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2209949080079943768KaBXDT Wild Rose: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2794845300079943768ONwOZC And I don't know what...

    The bird picture thread

Thanks. Thought that was a heron since although I couldn't see it well through the trees, I could get a sense of how big it was and the speed at which it was moving. The Ovenbird I wouldn't have known; I really need to work on my ear for birding. One species at a time I suppose. Matt

    The bird picture thread

Audio That's a great luna moth picture. A couple years ago, T-max and I saw one of those things nestled in a crack on the very top of Haystack-weird. Anyway, I have no bird pics, but while we've got the attention of all the birders on this thread, yesterday in the Catskills, I shot a short...

    The SUMMER flower thread

Pretty common, but here's some flowering raspberry: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2762012000079943768KETaww Also from yesterday, while off-trail in the Catskills, I came across these: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2617636470079943768hZeYXJ Later at home, I used the Peterson...

    Colorado Adventure

Fantastic. I think the pink flowers in the first flower pic might be Indian Paintbrush, but I'm not sure. Not idea about the others. Whole other world out there I guess. Matt

What is the equivalent of climbing Everest 16 times?

Great to hear that you're both strong and healthy with more than half the AT under your feet. I have a pretty hectic schedule this summer between work and fun stuff, but maybe I can sneak in a dayhike when you're in my neck of the woods. I'm an hour and change from north Jersey, the Hudson...

    Dr Bronners use ?

Use it every day at home, in the shower and for handwashing. My housemates and I buy the large bottles to refill the smaller ones, and we usually do dilute. I find it lasts a long time and is worth every penny and more. Great stuff. Matt

    Covalent Bonds - 7/6/08

That range was my first hike in the Whites-what a mindblower. Your pics are great, thanks. Love the cliff yoga. I also agree that Guyot is marvelous. Matt

    ADK peak-bagging weekend: 3 bugs, 9 summits and 1 sore foot (7/4 - 7/6)

I just figured out a long time ago that he's not human. He doesn't even sweat or breath hard as he breezes past and above the rest of us. Try riding with him some time. He can casually discuss the finer points of gear rings, chains, etc. while you're dying on the way up a steep hill. It's...

    ADK peak-bagging weekend: 3 bugs, 9 summits and 1 sore foot (7/4 - 7/6)

Nice pictures, both of you. Brings back memories of my one and only time on both of those ranges. I remember looking at that Nippletop slide and thinking it was crazy that people climbed it, it looked so steep. It was around then I think Neil climbed it for the first time and wrote that it's not...

    ADK peak-bagging weekend: 3 bugs, 9 summits and 1 sore foot (7/4 - 7/6)

Shoe Sucking Mud My one and only summer hike of Marcy, a couple of years ago-there was a family on top, very nice, somewhat less than totally prepared. They were from Texas, and dad said they wanted to "get the toughest one done" while they were in New York. I can't remember if I had the heart...

    ADK peak-bagging weekend: 3 bugs, 9 summits and 1 sore foot (7/4 - 7/6)

That is quite a weekend. I did CBND (as Jay calls it-sounds like a radio station) once, climbing Dial first, then on to the others, and afterward I felt that it would be better to go the other way, since the Leach trail is so soft, as you 7 Summits mentions. Any way you slice it though, that's a...

Grafton Loop Trail (GLT) Backpack Trip - LONG

No problem, just try to remember the second T in my name. Oh, wait, you're talking about those other guys, right?! ;) Seriously, nice report. I wish I lived closer to Maine when I read stuff like that. Matt

Jet Boil - works with which fuels?

I've had no problem using the red MSR canisters with my Jetboil. You actually get a little more fuel for your $$ with those anyway. The only thing you lose is the convenience of fitting the canister into the stove for storage. Matt
