Thomas Cole and Black Dome - 6/28/2008

First of all, welcome to the site. Secondly, nice report and pictures. I like picture #14, the one right after the bunchberry shots-it's a pic of Thomas Cole's summit from the flat area on the trail. That's a classic Catskill spot. The following pic of the butterfly is nice too. I think that's a...

    Book Suggestions?

The suggestions above are excellent. For other guides and books, maybe check out Black Dome Press. It's a great regional publisher. Some suggested titles: -The new editions of the T. Morris Longstreth books "The Catskills" and "The Adirondacks" Like great trip reports from days long since...

    Funny caption?

I'll offer: "Hey, I think this guys jacket might fit me!" ...but I think Sardog actually deserves the prize. Matt

    Catskill Loon-acy

Is it too late in the season for it to still be migrating? If it is in fact a long-term resident, that would be pretty cool. Please do try to get a pic if possible. So you have heard this one? Matt

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

Yes, you figured it out, I need my head examined. For normal (or at least less weird) people that only want to climb Halcott once, fall or winter would definitely make more sense. Matt

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

I climbed ND/Sherrill and then Halcott yesterday. I approached North Dome from the Devils Path. The nettles were pretty bad, but using jewelweed did help, and there was plenty to be found. When the yellow flowers come out later in the summer, it will be even easier to spot. I eventually climbed...

Nettles on North Dome & Sherrill?

Interesting. I've used Jewelweed "juice" to treat the sting, but never thought to use it beforehand as a preventive. Thanks Moose. Matt

    rusk trail

I don't know of any reliable herd path on Rusk, although there are old roads in the area. What I've always done is to follow the Spruceton Trail (jeep road/horse trail) up to the switchback and then take compass bearing for Rusk. I don't aim directly for the summit, but rather for the ridge a...

    Water Freeze/Thaw Question

Thanks for the responses guys. The point was how much to chill or freeze the water in the bottles, so as to not have to use a cooler at all, since I don't have a large cooler. Sorry, I didn't make that as clear as I could have. Tom and Dick, I just sent our group an e-mail about the cache. I...

    Water Freeze/Thaw Question

If this is off-topic, please delete, but it is hiking related, since it involves setting up a water cache for a long hike. Gallon jugs of water will be left in a car trunk from 5 AM until about 1 PM. It will be a white car, in the shade for part of the time, and by 1, the temps should be about...

Edmund's Path and Crawford Path, June 8

Terrific pics as always. I really want to get back over there to the Whites again one of these days. The second picture is Fringed Polygala.http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=fringed+polygala&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2. Matt

    Catskill loops with bicycle returns

Other than one ride from home to the Ashokan Reservoir, I have yet to ride in the Catskills, so I can't speak from experience. As an idea though, how about the Panther traverse? Drive to the hairpin turn parking lot and ride downhill back to Big Indian and then to the Fox Hollow trailhead...

    Pitchoff - 5/25/8 - Fantastic!

Great pics. Funny about the painted trillium. I was just commenting to Ted over the weekend how in the Catskills you don't usually see more than or two of the painted ones, whereas in the ADKs patches seem more common. That little Cascade park is indeed nice. One time on a down day the Funky...

Return to The Catskills -- 5/24-26

If you're still checking this thread, what did you decide to hike? I had been waffling about whether or not to head out of the area this weekend, but it's looking like I'll be hanging around these parts. I'll likely be climbing Sugarloaf and Plateau in some fashion tomorrow, either as a dayhike...

    Slide and Hunter

My suggestion would be to hike Hunter by way of Becker Hollow, then go grab lunch in Phoenicia or nearby, then go climb Slide. That way you can make a decision whether or not to return down Slide using the Curtis-Ormsbee Trail. It you have sufficient energy, it really doesn't add much mileage...
