    Millbrook Ridge-Gertudes Nose 1-20

Normally I wouldn't bother writing a TR for one of my run of the mill Gunks hikes, but I will to note a trail re-route. Today I hiked a double loop from West Trapps >Trapps Bridge>Millbrook Ridge>Millbrook Mt.>Gertrudes Nose, loop back to Millbrook Mt. by way of carriageway>Millbrook Mt...

    Wittenberg > Cornell > Slide 1/5/08

Excellent photo-documentation of a great hike, George. Definitely the most challenging Burroughs Traverse I've done, and also the most striking views I've ever had from that range. Snow really brings out both the beauty and the ruggedness of the hills. Matt

    XC Skiing the 'Gunks 1/5/07

That is indeed really strange that you didn't see more folks, considering the great conditions, which will likely soon be history. Good pics-I really like the wide view of Lake Awosting. Matt

    Catskill 8 Peaks - Peekamoose to Wittenberg - 12/29

Jim, Mtn. Goat, Doodles and I did the Woodland Valley to Slide traverse yesterday. It looked like your group was off-trail for part way down from Wittenberg? This seemed to be indicated by the most broken out track diverging from the trail for a while. Maybe we should have taken that line...

    Catskill 8 Peaks - Peekamoose to Wittenberg - 12/29

I believe that would have been the spot known as the Cornell chute/chimney/crack. Hard enough going up in the winter, let alone coming down. Was it loaded w/ lots of snow, a little snow, or just water ice? Matt

    Gloves w/ Wrist Guards?

It is indeed fun, and thanks for that tip. My friend did give me the basics on pole technique, but he did not talk about falling properly, which is too bad, because I could have gotten in a lot of practice! I'll continue to consider my options as to whether or not to use guards. Using guards...

    Gloves w/ Wrist Guards?

I tried XC skiing for the first time this past Saturday. I enjoyed it a lot, and learned a little from an experienced friend, but I did fall quite a few times. No big deal on the falling, since it was just a short distance and into snow. However, I fell on my hands a few times and I do have some...

What Animals have you seen on the summit?

If we're only talking on the summit, then mostly just birds: Black Cap Chickadees are common Dark-Eyed Juncos on Phelps and other places Purple Finch on Wittenburg One I'm pretty sure of, but not 100% was Cedar Waxwing atop Rusk. Raptors I've seen wheeling about above or near summits include...

    Verti-Go Away?

I don't even have a fear of falling. I have a fear of landing! But seriously, I used to be really bad with heights and only recently have been getting slightly better. I used to not even be too good with climbing fire towers-now that's nothing. I think like others have said, slowly building up...

    Peekamoose>Table>out to Denning

Date Hiked: 12/1/07 Trail Conditions: Little to no snow down low; about an inch or two up on the higher slopes and ridge. Some icing on Peekamoose, on the areas between the lookout ledges and the final climb to the summit. This is due to the spring, which is still flowing. Ice is avoidable...

    Stainless Steel Water Bottle Question

I will usually only use the Guyot in winter, so filtering won't be an issue, but thanks for posting that. Good to know. Not out of the realm of possibilities at when hiking on Mohonk Mountain House property in the Shawangunks. When hiking through the Ausable Club property in the Adirondacks...

    Stainless Steel Water Bottle Question

Not sure, I'll have to check when I get home. They are the standard, transparent, colored, 1 liter bottles. Matt

    Stainless Steel Water Bottle Question

I too had to "weigh" this decision, but I decided to try the steel for a while. I'm not exactly looking to go ultralight in the cold months anyway. Matt

I never taste plastic when drinking cold water, but always do when I put boiling water in Nalgenes.

    Stainless Steel Water Bottle Question

Thanks for the response. Kevin, I impulsively went ahead and ordered one online, assuming that no local stores had them yet. If I like it and buy another one, I'll probably get it locally and save the postage. I will use this primarily for hot liquids. For three years I've been pouring boiling...
