EVENT - Arlo has a new Baby Brother

It's actually Woody, w/ a Y. Woody Gutherie was himself actually named after Woodrow Wilson. (Off topic fact of the day) Anyway, congrats Ronnie! So you'll be taking Jaco up Cascade, what, like next week? :D Matt

East Side Trail, Wilderness Trail to Stillwater Junction

What, no peaks? ;) Seriously, nice report and beautiful photos as always. I finally got to see a moose (a cow on RT 16) while over there in August. Can't wait to get back over to New England. Matt

    odd sighting

T-max and I saw a Great Blue along the Neversink last early summer while we were following the fishermans path on the way to Rocky. That was also my first time seeing one in the backcountry, although I routinely see them around where I live in the Wallkill Valley. Matt

Very cool, Ed. Thanks The weather looks great for her big finish today. She should be able to enjoy her accomplishment up top for a while. Matt

    M & M to Finish AT on 9/17

This is weird-posting an event I unfortunately won't be able to make myself. Anyway, it looks like M & M (aka Dawn, aka Hike the 115) is on schedule to finish her incredible journey on Monday, if anyone happens to be in the neighborhood. I'll raise a pint in her honor that evening. Matt

    Lyme Disease Article

Here's a link for a piece in the Albany Times Union concerning how forest fragmentation may increase numbers of infected deer ticks: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=620378&category=OPINION&BCCode=&TextPage=1 It's a theory I've heard about before. The article also...

    Maine Mountain Madness 9/2 - 9/7

Very cool. Is Laurie working on the New England stuff now? I was just over in Maine a couple weeks ago bagging some of those same peaks, but I've been too busy/lazy to post a report. Hey, if you get a minute, PM me your address, maybe I can ride up to Tillson some time and we could take a walk...

    Long Path Map(s)?

We started discussing a Long Path map on a Catskill trip report thread over at ADK High Peaks, so I thought I'd take a little poll. If the Trail Conference or someone else were to publish a map or map set of the complete New York Long Path corridor, would you purchase it? Please vote and...

    Marcy to Gray herdpath

I'll toss in another vote for using the Lake Tear way, simply because Lake Tear is such a special place. Plus that trail on the south side of Marcy is so great. I've only climbed Gray once, and had a lot of fun going around the long way (Lake Arnold, Feldspar, etc.), climbing Gray, Skylight and...

    ADK Trail Registers

In New York, the registers are also one way to gather at least some data on the level of usage an area receives. Places like Marcy Dam and Lake Colden are worthy destinations of their own for some folks, not just spots on the way to peaks. As far as the break-in thing, it's thankfully not that...

A day on the AT with M&M aka hikethe115

Harry K and I were in New Hampshire last week (haven't had time to write a TR yet) and we hung out w/ Dawn and her AT posse at the condo Tuesday night. Wednesday morning (8/22) we dropped them off at the Rattle River trailhead in Gorham, so they were starting the last section of New Hampshire...

Six grand peaks in Maine! 08/06/07 - 08/10/07

Is the road pretty bad the entire way, or just the last mile(s) to the trailhead? Is it possible to park earlier on if necessary and road walk? Matt

    Scenic Hudson Parks Festival

A friend just sent this to me: http://www.scenichudson.org/events Looks like this might be fun for families or kids, especially. I'll be out of town- unfortunately, since I had been planning on climbing Beacon soon with a friend and his kid brother. Matt

Looking for advice - Trails for an 8 year old

Maybe be more specific as to the type of hike you think they would like to do. Mileage? Elevation gain? Rock scrambles? Do you mind paying a fee? How far do you want to drive? Lots of good options between Long Island and Albany, Gunks, Catskills, Hudson Highlands, Harriman, etc. Matt

The world according to the ADK46rs...

Congrats on the finish Jay. It was a pleasure hiking w/ you on such adventures as the Santanonis and Cliff/Redfield. Very nice pics there. I really have to hike RPR from that direction one of these days. Matt

A day on the AT with M&M aka hikethe115

My guess is that about 90% of AT hikers this year either know or at least have heard of M&M by now. Suprised to hear she is still in Vermont. Regardless, it sounds like she is still on or ahead of schedule. Matt

    VT/NH Trip 7/26-29

Wow, I had somehow forgotten about both of those things. Yes, that hut was strange, w/ the rancid food, heat, flies, mysterious substance in the bottle, etc. It was kind of creepy now that I think of it. And that chunk of quartz on the trail, a tenth or two of a mile below the summit of Abe...
