Cranberry Lake, NY: 2011 paddling Season

Just canceled this weekend's trip due to major flooding throughout much of the Adirondacks. Nothing on this furum yet, but check out the Adirondack Forum for a thread on that. http://www.adkforum.com/showthread.php?t=15567&referrerid=174

Cranberry Lake, NY: 2011 paddling Season

Mike - Doing a trip on Cranberry this coming weekend (April 29-May 1). I expect to be in Wanakena Friday April 29 (edit) at approx. Noon to launch my kayak with one other friend. Thanks for the tips on the sites. You're welcome to join us; not sure where we'll camp, but probably one of the sites...

Cranberry Lake, NY: 2011 paddling Season

Thanks, Mike. I like Cranberry site #32, when the pine sap isn't raining from the trees. Also camped on Sugar Is. last sumer (1000 Islands), but hope to do day trips out of some lodging on the NY side this year.

    Mount Marcy March 11-13

Thanks for your comments. It has been brought to my attention that I left out the post-hike part of the trip. After we all returned to the hostel and changed clothes, a few of us went out for a celebratory beverage and dinner at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery. A loud clinking of sturdy beer mugs...

    Mount Marcy March 11-13

Many trip reports that involve the Adirondack High Peaks, including accounts of my own solo treks, focus on the accomplishment of achieving a summit. We can sometimes extract much more from a hike if visiting a familiar place with friends, old or new, and seeing things from a fresh perspective...

Cranberry Lake, NY: 2011 paddling Season

I have a favorite site on the lake, but haven't yet paddled north to Joe Indian Island. Maybe this year.

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

David, we have a real winter in upstate New York, not a wimpy warm winter like down in NYC! :D

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

I would expect that the Stony Creek Ponds would still be icy, preventing you from reaching Indian Carry.

    Your predictions on Ice-out

Rivers should be open now, but getting to them can be a problem until the seasonal roads open in early May.

    Alistair! I hear you're interested in David's "Ice-out" trip - here's what I can tell you about...

Alistair! I hear you're interested in David's "Ice-out" trip - here's what I can tell you about the route: All the launches are good, and there are no rocky places that you might scratch your boat on. The landings are either muddy shores or coarse sandy beaches. The launch at Indian Carry on...

Of trouts and trees - intentionally blocking streams

On the one fast local stream that I paddle on, we cut away some of the fallen branches in order to provide a safe path for paddlers to go through, but we don't remove or relocate logs. On the Oswegatchie River between the headwaters and High Falls, larger logs have a section removed, or a notch...

    misspelled summit sign! - MacNaughton

When I was on MacNaughton yesterday, I tried to walk over to the summit sign to write in the missing "A", but the snow depth prevented me. Maybe next time! ;)

MacNaughton via Wallface Ponds - April 3

Very good trail conditions all the way from the Loj to Scotts Clearing, and up to Wallface Ponds. Some snow bridges over small streams have melted, but the ice bridges over the larger brooks are still intact. Wallface Pond (and all ponds) still nicely frozen and easily crossed. I crossed...

    Adirondack Mountain Guide

What I heard last weekend is the National Geographic/ADK map series will be updated for release in Fall 2011, and ADK's guide books will be consolidated (revised?) and released in Spring 2012. By the way, what are "BB's and Wikilocks"?
