The time of year is critical, as you know. I hiked on the Tonto Trail (el. 3000-4000 feet) in mid-May '09 with daytime temps over 100F. Knowing that you can obtain water once a day from a DEPENDABLE source is equally important. I definitely plan to go back.

Pass I can't relate to Ralston on a personal level because I don't climb the big mountains, nor do I go off solo without telling at least one person where I'm going and when to expect me back. I place what he did in a somewhat different category than the crazy guy who got himself and his lady...

Catalogs such as Cabelas, Gander Mtn., etc. are not aimed at backpackers, and sleeping solutions like that are certainly not intended for backpacking. Rather, they appeal to a person who just doesn't want to sleep on the ground, and doesn't have to carry the tent & cot too far from the pick-up...

I have one of the older Bear Vault solo canisters. Any idea as to whether the rangers reject those anywhere other then in the high-use traditionally problematic areas of Marcy Dam-Lake Colden-Flowed Land?

Already was in Old Forge, but closed. Macs also in Saranac Lake, Tupper, and Lake Placid. Convenient (if not clean) restrooms for travellers, but I prefer Stewarts for food and "rest"...

You can certainly do overnight trips in just about any kayak; it's just a matter of how much gear you want to bring and the weight capacity of the boat. Either of the 12-footers that you linked to will handle the job. If there is no aft bulkhead, simply use dry bags for your gear - you'll find...
