DIX ATTEMPT:
Lots of snow. Our group of 4 broke trail from Rt. 73 to the base of the Dix slide where the trail begins to gain altitude in earnest. It took us 7 hours to plow 5 miles through snow ranging from a foot deep to waist deep. A large group followed our trail to the Bouquet LT later...
The paddling community was well aware of the situation and the issues at stake. The "Explorer" merely aggravated and escalated a situation without being willing to follow through to resolution. Now, there are motion-activated trail cams ready to obtain photographic proof against any paddler...
This article has more information regarding the land classification, which is stated as Wild Forest http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=900437&category=REGION
If that is the case, and the towers are not currently on wilderness land, I am in favor of retaining and restoring...
Thanks, WW, there are many fine shots up here. I had to zip the contrast to make it a true silhouette, because there was some detail in the rocks.
Another Bryce image from last year:
The thaw last week didn't have much effect on the trails. Plenty of snow from the Loj all the way to both summits. We wore snowshoes all the way, but probably didn't need them (other than the rule mandating the wearing of snowshoes!). Indian Brook was high and MOSTLY frozen. At Indian Brook, the...
WHO ARE YOU CALLING AN OLD F..... (oops, excuse me). I don't train at all, but I do work in a big-box store and walk all day long, as well as lifting merchandise, kneeling on the floor, etc. Works for me at age 57.
Tyler is right. This forum has many members who live in or near the lake country, as well as those of us who frequent the Adirondacks year-round who can give up-to-date lake ice condition reports, better than any website could do... but you could monitor the Stillwater webcam...
I've paddled and camped on the Raquette in late April when the Fish Creek Ponds and Cranberry Lake were still iced over. The Raquette River is navigable before the lakes open up because of the moving water, but watch out for ice floes! I've also driven past Indian Lake in early May and observed...
Good to hear that RickB had the know-how to survive that, and that he walked out on his own. I was on Kinsman Ridge Saturday, and had no wind then. If Moosilauke had similar conditions Saturday morning, he would have had a very nice and satisfying walk out... other than thinking about beating...
After getting stuck on a logging road near Pillsbury Mtn. a couple years ago, I bought a nylon webbing tow strap. It came in handy last April when I got stuck in a soft spot while trying to drive up into the Santanoni TH parking area at Upper Works (do not attempt this in the spring). A ranger...

Lafayette Trailhead Conditions: Big pile of human feces on the trail just outside the tunnel on the Lafayette Place (campground) side of I-93, now snow-covered. Natural gas leak very apparent inside the tunnel.
Lonesome Lake trail, Fishin' Jimmy, and Kinsman Ridge Trail Conditions...
