How does Owl's Head in White Mountains look like an actual owl's head?

FWIW I believe it's labeled Owl Head on the old map, not Owl's Head.

How does Owl's Head in White Mountains look like an actual owl's head?

I can definitely see it in the winter photo of the cliff at the south end, but I fail to see it in any of the photos showing the whole mountain. All good photos though.

Solo hiking a badge of honor?

Approximately 3/4 of my NH hikes over the years have been solo but I never thought to separate them from "accompanied" hikes in my record keeping. The only one of note in my mind is soloing Owls Head on a hot August day at the age of 63 to finish the 48. After a while, you start talking to...

Solo hiking a badge of honor?

Variants of this discussion pop up here about once a year. The truth is that it's all good. Hiking solo, hiking with your dog, hiking with your wife or girlfriend, hiking with your BFF, hiking with your kids, hiking to check off peaks on a list, hiking peaks on a list when you know you'll never...

    Mt. Shaw (Ossipee Range)

So the "Italian Trail" is more of a nickname. It makes sense due to the colors, although usually a trail is blazed in one color not two. I love these idiosyncrasies. Someone should set up an ice cream stand at the trailhead and sell Spumoni. The Snout/Snoot usage is also interesting though...

I hope that label sticks, Semi-Pemi. Well said. Were you fond of Bond?

    Mt. Shaw (Ossipee Range)

Thanks for the link to the map, peakbagger. I did not have a reference point to compare Sierra's route up the Mt Shaw Trail to the westerly approach advocated by Ken in his book. Looks like the Mt Shaw Trail, while more direct, is around 400-500 feet lower as a starting point. Anyone wish to...

    Mt. Shaw (Ossipee Range)

So are the Ossipees considered a separate range from the White Mts or a sub-range? It sounds like there are a lot of trails in the area of Mt Shaw and Mt Roberts. Can someone link me to a reliable map or post one here? Thanks.

    Mt. Shaw (Ossipee Range)

Thanks for posting reports on these 52WAV peaks. I follow them even when not commenting. I didn't know anything about Shaw or Roberts so this is both interesting and helpful. I have found that the difference between hiking weekdays and weekends in NH is considerable.

    Thank you, Dr. Mohammed Ellozy

Mohammed and Dave Metsky were both great sources of NH info for me when I got serious about pursuing the 48.

This article is reason why people get in trouble using the internet to select hikes

The "green mountains under a cloudy sky" photo that accompanies the Downes Brook header are certainly not in the Sandwich Range. What a wealth of misinformation! Must have missed that lighthouse in the Pemi.

    HikeSafe card usage

Even though I'm only in NH for a week, I get the card every year as both insurance and because I support the mission.

    Back in NH

Ok TEO, I'll bite. How did you hike Black Mt "by accident?" Confuse it with another Black Mt?

Nice going. Took me 37 years to do the 48 but what's the rush?

    Back in NH

I returned to NH last week for my annual visit although I have missed a few years. Though I've never lived in NH, I've been coming back to hike these mountains for 50 years now. The middle of August has been one of the more reliable times in terms of weather over the years, but it was mostly wet...

    Ageism or Irresponsibility?

I don't think he is irresponsible for hiking solo at 83. It all depends on his condition. If he fell descending, then he must have been capable enough to do the climb. At 71, this is an issue that has reared its ugly presence in my head. I was in great shape (for my age) before my recent illness...
