Winter is over, what did y'all do

Got new BC skis for Christmas. Looked at them for 3 weeks. Put them in the garage. Used them once. Used my old rock skis once. Hiked. Climbed 15 Catskill high peaks, 3 Adirondack high peaks, other local hikes. Put snowshoes on 3 times. Got sunburned.

    Walking Music

...and after chewing up miles of trail at record speed, you'll be amazed that you still have more than enough energy to smash your music player to bits!!! :p

Catskills: Plateau and Sugarloaf from Mink Hollow Road, 3/18/12

Started with Plateau. Barebooted until about 2900-3000'. Microspikes were adequate for the remainder -- maybe one spot where crampons would have been more comfortable, but not worth the trouble. At about the same elevation on Sugarloaf we changed to crampons. Still lots of ice on Sugarloaf...

Very comfortable, clean, motel. Several rooms have king beds! If you ask, they will give you old towels to clean off...

    Catskill Conditions

We were on North Dome and Sherrill Saturday, 3/10, and Halcott, Sunday, 3/11. Snowshoes were very helpful above 3000' or so, especially on Sunday with the warm temps and mashed potato snow. It's supposed to be pretty warm this week, so I would keep an eye on what gets reported from this...

    Appointment to FLTC

I'll be the contrarian here. I love that it ends where it does! I've been hiking the FLT near home for years and have a great fondness for it. On a hike of Peakamoose and Table last summer with Tom and Laurie, I got a real kick out of seeing the "End of FLT" sign in the middle of the woods...

    Retiring to Maine?

Absolutely...and I love it. My brother moved to west-central Maine (Farmington) in 1985. Near the Rangely area, which is gorgeous. He's now a pastor in a church in Belfast. As far as my "now go home" comment, I thought that maybe Chip was a closet Maine resident when he responded with "New...
