I grew up in Wellsboro (Tioga County, PA) and it breaks my heart to see what is happening there. The landscape is scarred, the traffic is absolutely horrendous. Local infrastructure is reaching a breaking point...schools, social services, etc...it's a mess! What was formerly a bucolic little...

I read on ADKHighpeaks that the trails out of Elk Lake are closed for hunting season...not sure when they re-open.

I was with Tom that day, just after Irene hit. I would add that if they're getting the heavy rain the up north this week, both rivers could be a bit tougher to cross in the short term. (I guess it depends on when you plan to go.) I wonder if there has been recent trouble with the walkway...

According to this thread it appears someone has been "helpful" on the Herbert Brook path to Marshall, as well.

If I'm not mistaken, Phil Brown's latest posting of trail status in the high peaks still shows that trail section as closed.

Just curious, Alan, with whom does NatGeo consult when doing these map projects? Sounds like this one has some significant flaws.

You might also consider something in the Seward Range...if you're looking for a high peak with a great view, Donaldson is a beauty. It is accessed from Corey's, northeast of Tupper Lake. This is a marked trail for part of the way, then follows the Calkins Brook herd path to the summit ridge...

So I guess it's no surprise that your expectations were met, eh? :rolleyes: Sorry you didn't enjoy it. It's a fabulous range, and on a nice day the views (especially from Santanoni) are spectacular. I encourage you to go back on a nice day...and perhaps do the loop in the opposite direction...

Nope. I may at some point, but I figure the four non-4K peaks more than make up for it. :) There's also Yard and Tabletop East. Not exactly sure how McNaughton attained its lofty status as the one which the 46ers put on their peak list (thought not required).

Congratulations! It's quite a feeling, eh? I'm still on a high from finishing back in June. Planning to head up in September and hit a few repeats. BTW, I understand completely re the acid reflux...freaked me out until I finally got the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Hmmm. I understand they are in the process of coming out with new NG maps for the Adirondacks to coincide with a new series of trail guides. I sure hope they don't drop the mileage from those. That is such a helpful planning feature!
