Dix (NY) on a beautiful day!

I was telling Fran about you guys as we were ascending and looking through the trees at the slide. We'll give you a call when we're heading up to do Allen, but like I said, it might be very last-minute. Allen, Basin, Gray, Skylight.

Black fly reports for your area?

Saturday, 6/4, saw no sign of them on the hike to Dix Mtn via Round Pond. Sunday we hike Blackhead in the Catskills and although there seemed to be a few buzzing around us at the parking area, they weren't biting and were negligible throughout the hike.

Dix (NY) on a beautiful day!

Franny and I left the Round Pond TH at just a little before 7am Saturday, having driven up from Saratoga Springs that morning. It was pretty chilly, so the long-sleeve layer and lower part of the convertible pants stayed on til almost half way to Round Pond...I should know better.:rolleyes...

Dix Mtn. via Rt. 73 and Round Pond, 6-4-11

Trail in excellent condition, considering the late thaw and the wet spring. Not much mud at all by Adirondack standards. A trail crew cleared blowdown to just beyond the slide a few weeks ago. Thanks to Pete and crew!!! Now a couple new trees down, but nothing difficult to get around, under...

    Hiking info?

Teejay's recommendations are terrific! Also, a few moderate, non-4K peaks you might consider are Hurricane, Noonmark, and Hopkins. All are in the Keene Valley area and are fun hikes with expansive views of the high peaks.

    Long weekend in the Catskills

Nice pics, Tom! Did you get those on the way home, Sunday? With a 3 hour drive, we resisted the temptation to open that growler of Hurricane Kitty. Tasted mighty fine when we got home, though!

Scanning guide books to save weight

Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for a great idea. Prior to hiking this weekend I scanned the relevant guide book pages and map sections for my hikes. I printed them and placed them back-to-back in a ziplock bag. Not only does it save weight, but it's so easy to stuff in your pocket and...

    Biggest Nature Surprise

White Tank Mountains, west of Phoenix. I was out there attending a conference and had an afternoon off, so Fran and I headed out to this nearby State? park. We just wanted to get out and stretch our legs before heading to Sonoma and Flagstaff the next day. What a wonderful surprise. Desert...

Winter Stats - Tally 'em up!

This was our first time hiking any winter high peaks...but not our last! ADK46 - 2 CAT35 - 3 2 failed attempts on Baxter Mountain (NY). Many many miles on x-c skis and snowshoes locally.

    Latest Forest Ranger Report

I guess the rescue crew are to be congratulated for not slapping the $hit out of them... "Gosh, thanks for letting us wander around the woods all night looking for your sorry butts."

Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor Vacation Pics

Very nice pics! Seeing your shots of riding on the carriage trails brought back some great memories of the times Fran and I have had there.

Lake Arnold Trail - Feldspar LT

That "caution" on the DEC site has been there for a few years now. We hiked that trail in September '09 and May '10 and had no problems whatsoever...like Mike said, no worse than other Adirondack trails. (and that was prior to the work done this summer)

Sounds you love in the woods

Hearing a pair of hermit thrushes calling to one another, from either side of the trail.

    Hurricane Mt - 9-11-10

Thanks, Alan. Looks like a nice hike. I was thinking of taking that route when we hiked Hurricane from Crow Clearing last weekend. Looks like you had a much calmer day on the summit! Great pics, as always, Jo!

    Acadia

Lots of great hiking and biking. For biking, try the carriage trail system, unless you're on skinny tires. Otherwise there is a park road that is would probably be good for a touring bike. For hiking, Otter Cliffs, Gorham, Penobscot, Sargeant, Dorr, Cadillac (if you can handle the diesel...
