    wasp nest?

Yes, Bald Faced Hornets, very aggressive. Nests generally get larger and more prominent in late summer. Same family as yellow-jackets, people call them wasps, but they are really hornets. Kind of a different Genus (IIRC). Typically YJs nest in the ground or in wall voids, whereas the BFH will...

Hiking in South Central Alaska - recommendations

I have to add a big positive PLUS to what Chugach said about Crow Pass in Girdwood. I stumbled upon it accidentally 5 years ago while looking for a place to stealth camp after picking up my rental car. I pulled into the parking lot after driving down this godforsaken road (in the dark in a...

    Extending Backpack Straps

Sewing is pretty cool, but it takes me like 2 hours to get a stitch down right. However, I've had pretty good success with using Tri-Glides. I thread the original strap through it (in frm the bottom, up over the middle tine and back down under) and then follow through with the new strap. It...

Any unplowed mountain roads for early x-country skiing in NE?

I used to ski the Wachusett Roads back when we lived near the mountain. Not only is there the main auto road, but there are back roads behind the mountain that many folks ski and snowshoe on, where you can avoid the ski slopes and the lights.

    winter/mountaineering boots question

Note on the Sorel Conquests. The tongue of the boot is attached to the upper all the way to the top, making the neck of the boot a smaller circle to get your foot into. If you are trying to get the boot on while sitting in a tent or a vestibule in bitter cold, wrapped in winter garb, it can be...

"The man who skied down Everest"

I watched is last night - He said he skied 6,600 feet in 2 minutes and then slid 1,300 feet. I replayed this several times and I am sure that is exactly what he said. He originally estimated he would be skiing 100 MPH. I am not a great downhill skier any more, (and not to take anything away...

    Winter Question

I was in Flowed Lands one fine winter weekend a few years back and I had hung my food properly (or so I thought) - At least 20' off the ground and 5-8 feet away from Branches, but I awoke to a rustling noise and got out of my tent to find a pine marten's rear end sticking out of my foodbag (I...

Window smashed at Ethan Pond TH today

It' time for us to stalk our own trailheads and take them back. Park a vehicle at a TH and step off 25 yards into the woods and hide. Wait for a day or an afternoon - Whatever it takes. Get them on Camera, chase them down and get their license plates (Or if you are like me and truly have no...

    Calculating elevation gain.

I count it in the tally if, while I am hiking, I have to tilt my head up and say "Oh #$#$##$@$. Another frigging hill?!?!????"

    Any flat water kayakers?

I used to paddle Mendon Ponds Park in Rochester in February/March (as soon as I could get access). I usually wear a shortie wetsuit and pongoes/pogos (those big neoprene mitts). Nice to get out for an hour and have no one else around.

    boot adaptation for step-in crampons?

cold or wet, constant pounding..... off kilter steps. I'd bring a backup, but I also like the idea. Are the screws into the board last or into the rubber-like midsole?

    winter/mountaineering boots question

Carla, I looked at a similar boot years ago, I consider these mountaineering boots, but not in the traditional NE sense - especially for overnight trips. These are boots for climbing rock and ice routes in areas that don't get continuous subzero temps like we do. I think of high mountain...

Got Engaged on Slide over the weekend!

I did the same thing on the same mountain on 10/4/1997 when I completed my 46. We were married a year later. Funny, though.... On the 10 year anniversary of that date 2 weeks ago, I fondly rememberd finishing my 46, but not asking her to marry me (it took a couple of days and she mentioned...

    Car sleeping

Why not look into a used Diesel Jetta Wagon. You'll get upwards of 45 MPG, a rock solid engine and years of diesel reliability. I have had 3 diesels so far, a Jetta and 2 golfs, which aresmaller than the Jetta wagon. I can sleep barely in the golf, but I am crumpled and cramped in the...

    Car sleeping

Ford Ranger pickup with 6.5 foot bed and a fiberglass cap. Was my trailhead domain for almost a decade. I now have a Dodge Dakota and have slept under the tonneau cover that came with it, but it is a little too low for me. Warning!!!! Thread Drift!!!!!! I would have bought a cap for it by...

    Better Than Duct Tape?

I know nothing about Gaffers tape, though I have had very good experiences with high quality duct tape and poor experiences with inexpensive duct tape usd on my feet. I did this for many years and discovered the cheap duct tape had fewer threads on teh backing and would actually contribute to...
