Yes, We are driving, which will save us $$ over the 3 country rail pass. However, as I start to consider the luggage (I carry a backpack, but my wife and son insist upon Roller bags) and the kid carrier (I can't well carry my backpack with the kidcarrier on) and accessibility, I am starting to...

    Switzerland

Thanks DP. WE looked into the Swissrail, but since we need to go to Germany for a few days for a wedding, both the Eurail or a combo Swissrail (limited countries) and simple destination train tickets to Baden for us blew the budget. Thanks for the tip on the train to Zermatt.

I'll be there in a couple of weeks. I am adding Zermatt to my list, which already includes Chamonix. This won't be so much hiking as it will be a family vacation with our 7YO and 11 Month old. I am interested in any other areas or suggestions. Spent a few years in Germany in Fulda and...

Camping with back problems - OR Mats?

I swear by a hammock now. I started using a Hennessy last year, and let's face it folks, I cannot see lowering my standards to join my lower class ground-dwelling hikemates any longer. :D Hammocks are cool. I have used mine down to 25 with a blue foam pad and some reflectix. This spring I...

    Dr Bronners use ?

I voted for the Ed sullivan date, though the first time I trried it was really in the 80's. Carried that damn mint bottle with me for the better part of 7 years, using it as sparingly as possible for anytihng that I couldn't just use plain water on (I was too cheap to throw it out). Then I...

Looking for dog friendly hikes near Corning Ny

Also, one more thing. From a topography perspective, you will find that in NY and PA the mountaintops are the true level of the land varying from 1500 - 2000 feet. What you think is the level of the land - The valleys and flats that people live in are really the cuts caused by erosion...

    Paddling the Erie Canal?

Marc, I don't remember where the boat launches were in Rochester - I lived near Pittsford for about 4 years before moving S to Honeoye Falls and used to run or XC Ski on the towpath almost daily. I was wondering about your comment about few things to do, but then realized if it was college...

    Paddling the Erie Canal?

Kayaked and canoed over the years. Lockport (Widewaters) - Albion. and all spots in between quite a few times. Nottalot to see. Usually you are below the level of the towpath and cannot see much. Not as much fun as it would appear. Fun to go under bridges - especially the lowered lift...

    GPS suddenly goes kaput.

My GPS Map76CSX went Kaput after a year. It was a broken battery connection. I took it back to Bean and they replaced it on the spot. Even let me keep the (old) extra cable.

    A hiking death in NY...

Spent a lot of years hiking in Hi Tor. One of the many places I miss around Rochester/Finger Lakes. Since a few local rescue crews (and some not so local) do ropes courses and practice rescues there, it was probably easy to get a lot of folks there on a Sunday afternoon. I am wondering if...
