Info on second recent Fatality on Katahdin

I love Baxter and missed it for the first time in 38 years this year for obvious reasons. I'll be back! Not to ignite an old debate- I for one appreciated the rules, I thought these actually helped keep the remote nature of the place. The big mountain draws so many "must-do" hikers who will...

Maine exempts Ct., N.Y., N.J. folks from restrictions to visiting

Just had to cancel my trip to Baxter next week, as it is not possible in my area in Mass to get tested and have results in 72 hours as required by Maine rules, first year since 1981 I will not make it to the park. Minor compared with what many people are dealing with, grateful to be safe, still...

Wildcat closed for two weeks - good time for a winter hike

Sorry I don't see the ridiculous. How many global pandemics have we encountered in the last 17 years? To err on the side of caution to protect our friends in the mountains seems like the right way to go IMHO. People will all make their own decisions but old eric presents a valid reasonable point...

    Traveler Loop In The Rain

Doing the loop counterclockwise- typically the recommended way- coming down No Traveler encounters some open granite slabs, never did the red rock in rain, not "smooth" more of a corrugated surface. might depend on how comfortable you are on wet rock. Definitely exposed for much of the last mile...

no swimming allowed at Chimney, some swim in the basin ponds on CP Trail. I also rec the Lake, a special spot, great swimming. Pretty good swimming hole on roaring brook if you follow the stream about a 1/2 mile down from from leanto 10 Have a great trip.

Is New Baxter State Park Director Hurting Operations?

Just spent 3 nights at So Branch & 2 nights at Roaring Brook. Conditions at So Branch were the same as usual, presence of rangers, bear warnings, TP in the outhouses, good supply of soft & hardwood. Roaring brook, one outhouse without TP, (fixed the next morning) lesser ranger presence, when the...

Baxter State Park From The North Gate

Not sure of rule, but I have seen many people put a small ten inside a leanto. They will not allow on the site. BTW So Branch Mtn & Black Cat across the lake from Traveler loop is another good 1/2 day hike you can make a loop coming back on Pogy trail. Nearby Burnt Mth offers surprising views...

Baxter State Park From The North Gate

South Branch has 7 lean tos on the water. If you snag a tent site there are open spots on the "beach" - a wonderful rocky waters edge- that all campers can access, some day use picnic tables, a small dock etc.. It has been quite a few years since I came in the North gate- I usually drive up...

Is New Baxter State Park Director Hurting Operations?

That is too bad. I will be making my annual sojourn the week of the 14th. Started in the 80s, in those days park was staffed with full time Rangers, many you saw year after year. About 15 years ago, it seemed staffing became more transitory. However, I have never seen major trash issues...

    Baxter Park itinerary help

Katahdin Stream to Russell with multi day packs seems awfully long haul over tough terrain IMHO, I have done these trails separately never in one trip, maybe others have better experience, but I think it would be a very difficult day, can you make a stop at Davis, this is a gem of a spot. Good...

    Davis Path

Old news, but I did it two weeks ago, used snowshoes to help pack the trail. Assume the conditions are about the same, everything in good shape, packed snow. Someone had taken a few detours around the top after the steep ledge, some wandering trails to get back on course.

    Too Old to Hike?

Interesting topic. If you had told me in my 20s I would still be hiking into the 60s I would have been happy. Now I hope to push into retirement with a goal of 70 or beyond. I have left a few trails behind: Knife Edge Double top from the south, Caps Ridge, longer backpacking trips. I also try to...
