Which warms you up faster, up or down? (Winter)

That's new to me. I'm roasting on the climb, and then adding a layer or two for the descent even though I'm rather faster on the down hill in winter. -vegematic

New Bridge: Highwater Trail at Hastings

The bridge is in place although it lacks decking. I would guess later this fall and that they want it ready for snow machines this winter.

New Bridge: Highwater Trail at Hastings

I was rolling down RT 113 on Saturday, 31 Aug and noticed a work site at the former suspension bridge across the Wild River at Hastings. The old bridge was taken out by Irene a couple years ago. It is being replaced by a very sturdy-looking single span steel bridge. It's ugly as hell but it...

    Grafton Notch in Maine

I think I know the falls you are asking about and I believe they are a site for ice climbing. There may be a herd path for that reason, although I've never tried to get to the falls.

Tecumseh and Waumbek and Hale, Triple Hit & Run, 7/6/2013

Thanks for sharing the report BIGEarl, and congratulations on the new hearing aids. I consider the wind, water, and birdsong such an elemental part of my hiking experience - I'm glad you are able to reclaim that. -vegematic

    Haystack - Miles Notch redlining

I hiked the Haystack Notch Trail and the same section of the Miles Notch trail last fall in the pouring rain. Water crossings weren't as bad for us and the trail was easy to follow. Since then, however, the lower part of the MN Trail has been bulldozed. How far up did that damage go? -vegematic

Highwater Trail vs. Wild River Trail

I've hiked both. The most significant crossing is of the Wild River itself where the Spider Bridge used to be. By taking the Highwater Trail you will avoid that. The crossings along the HT are a little more challenging than the other crossings along the WRT, but none should be a major issue...

    Mountain Bird Watch this spring

This is a wonderful project. I adopted the Mt. Success route last year after West Royce was cancelled. The new protocol is even easier than it was a couple years ago.

Moriah via Stony Brook, Sunday - 12/30/2012 - DATE CHANGE

Looks like very high winds developing tomorrow so I'll check the Obs forecast in the morning and may choose a lower elevation trip. Here's hoping the speeds are revised downward. -vegematic

    Owl

It isn't owl-specific, but I often go to Cornell's AllaboutBirds website for id's. You can search for individual owls and listen to their vocalizations by clicking on "sound". the link I've given you is for the Barred Owl, which is the one I hear most often.

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

It was a bit of a frustrating photography year for me. I moved up to a DSL (Canon T3i) and it has taken me most of the year to be able to get pictures from it that are at least as good as those I took with my old PS A610. So here is a link to my top ten that I've posted on Google+. The...

Anyone know current trail conditions for Puzzle Mtn, Baldpates, Grafton Notch area?

What peakbagger said. Here in Bethel it's warm and moist today, and as the temp drops, ice will form. The ledges on Puzzle are much less steep than East Baldpate. I'd throw light traction in the pack just in case, but you'll likely not need it. If you do choose to visit Puzzle, be sure to check...
