I think I know the falls you are asking about and I believe they are a site for ice climbing. There may be a herd path for that reason, although I've never tried to get to the falls.

I hiked the Haystack Notch Trail and the same section of the Miles Notch trail last fall in the pouring rain. Water crossings weren't as bad for us and the trail was easy to follow. Since then, however, the lower part of the MN Trail has been bulldozed. How far up did that damage go? -vegematic

I've hiked both. The most significant crossing is of the Wild River itself where the Spider Bridge used to be. By taking the Highwater Trail you will avoid that. The crossings along the HT are a little more challenging than the other crossings along the WRT, but none should be a major issue...
