Ammo Rescue - Lost one of his alpine hiking sneakers

Apparently it was not the full-on Winter alpine hiking sneaker designed by Post Hole Sports!

Get Rescued? Make a Mandatory PSA!

How's this for an idea? This guy did all the wrong things and paid the price. Not sure if it's public shaming or public service, but an interesting approach nonetheless. Note: Oahu has some of the most dangerous ridge walks I've ever done.

Winter - Enjoy what is left of it

Bummer Seth. I've missed your cool posts. But take heart. I had a frayed meniscus repair three years ago and the knee came back as good as new.. In fact, I walked out of the day surgery building. A few months of PT and all good. Now all I'm dealing with is old age!! Rock on....

    Another Unprepared Hiker Rescue

The role of the Cog in this rescue is interesting. They dispatched not one, but two trains to deliver SAR folks to the junction of the Westside trail. That's pretty far up the hill. I assume they burned some diesel and called in crew to run the trains. Who pays for that? Or is it written...

    Another Unprepared Hiker Rescue

From the Patch story this kid sounds like a real jerk! He should be assigned 1000 hours of community service in the WMNF. Conditions were very similar to the Kate rescue weekend. How long can we expect our skilled and generous SAR folks to answer calls in this type of forecasted weather?

    Echos of Emily

Mount Baldy is in the news again. Bad weather was the forecast. Yet an experienced three-season hiker walked solo into the storm. She did not return. How does this happen?

Obs rotated the Tower Cam to the west

We regularly workout at Mount Agamenticus in York Maine. It's 3 miles from the ocean and on a clear day Mt Wash and the entire Presi ridge looks sweet. About 85 air miles I believe. I've read accounts by Celia Thaxter that she often saw the mountain from her home on the Isles of Shoals.. Of...

Put that GPS on a Leash!

Interesting accident report from Mt Hood. No mention of a compass or a paper map.

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

In aviation risk management they use the analogy of many slices Swiss cheese. Most of the time the holes in the slices don't line up and pilots survive one, two, maybe even three consecutive mistakes. When the holes finally do line up the pilot often dies in the resulting accident. Here the...

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

Here is a snippet from a Union Leader story that places some of the responsibility for the accident on the weather service: ... He knew the trails intimately and had hiked them in all kinds of conditions. But nothing in the forecast prepared him for what he encountered on the grueling Pemi...

All in the Family - Eugene S. Daniell Clan

For all you history buffs and genealogy fans out there.... Here is an interesting video essay on Gene Daniell's dad. Quite the firebrand revolutionary. I can see why/how Gene himself did a year in jail as a war resister in the 60s. I did his Maine 6-pack one October and have really fond...

    Another Cold Weather Rescue

Here's a story of three folks who found the summit of Monadnock very cold. What's interesting in this call out is SAR placed the victims in a Bothy Bag to warm them up. Looks like a 4-person model.

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

Yup. It's a book waiting to be written. "Calling Ty Gagne...."

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

And here I think the debilitating effects of progressive hypothermia might come into play. Very competent people can (and do) make bad decisions under its spell.

    Pulks

The black one looks like a model sold by EMS 20 years ago. Very nice rigid suspension that is telescopic so it can be used extended with XC skis and shortened for trail use with snowshoes. Only lacks a keel fin for stability on a side slope. Worth the $$ for a Baxter-bound hiker.

    Winter Trail Running and Negligence

Note: The following post assumes the victim was doing a one-day Pemi Traverse as reported in this forum: This latest fatal near Bond got me thinking about the nature of Winter trail running. If F&G went through Christopher's pack and deemed him "under equipped" for a winter hike above...

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

I was surprised at the timing of events: 1. First communication with the victim was not till around 10 PM at night. What had been going on with him from sunset at 4:30 until that time? Was he trying to self-rescue somehow? 2. It took rescuers 15 hours to reach the scene. In a case like this...

Its that time of the year - Renew NH Hike Safe Card

i Wonder why they require and print your date of birth on the card. Anyone know? Seems unnecessary and also a security / privacy risk.
