Berlin NH ATV Jamboree August 5th and 6th

How was it? Nothing yet on F&G's site, that's good news.

Berlin NH ATV Jamboree August 5th and 6th

You said a mouthful, "That's really a dumb statement friend." We are all gang bangers, drug lords and creeps that are supporting the NH tourist industry. Why would those people even come up to NH? What kind of money would one get protecting your turf or selling drugs at high traffic areas...

How to Cover the Costs of Mountain Mishaps

Mont Blanc and the highest peaks in Europe are very different that the Whites. 1,000's of non-technical climbers walk on Franconia Ridge and in the Presidentials without issue every weekend. That is not true for Mt. Blanc, the Matterhorn or the other high peaks of Europe. I doubt anyone...

Berlin NH ATV Jamboree August 5th and 6th

Do snowmobilers and ATV riders see a lot of bears? IDK. I've seen three, two in situations where they have grown to live in suburban neighborhoods and the other, I was hiking solo and therefore was very quiet in my approach. I have lousy hearing & I've never had an ATV or snowmobile sneak up...

    Hiker dies on Jewell Trail.

WTNH made correction, They were referencing the MO hiker.

    Hiker dies on Jewell Trail.

How many rescues/recoveries were there this weekend ? I have two possibly conflicting follow-ups: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/missouri-man-65-died-on-mount-washington-despite-life-saving-efforts-by-fellow-hikers/ar-AA10bDPn AND...

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

Thank you, that is a shame, but you can't blame the owners. I had been there several times including before a well-attended Moriah hike where John Burroughs was passing out CD's from his album. It's still in the 6-CD changer and gets played on the way to every NH or ADK hike.

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

Or large boulders as false summits, I've touched a dozen or more thinking it might be the summit and didn't want to have missed it, just to find it wasn't the top.

Hiker Rescue yesterday on Washington (Mt Clay)

I feel bad for his family. Why and what he was thinking are things we'll never figure out. if this was his first trip that went awry, it was a bad place to learn. A few scouts and I did a trip on the humid weekend we had in May, two scouts did not bring enough water and an adult felt a little...

    ADK parking etc

A better question may be, are the shuttles running from the airfield? I recall they had what looked like a decent plan and then covid made ride sharing seem more dangerous than the hiking.

    ADK parking etc

If by John's Brook, you mean the Garden, it's usually busier than Elk Lake (or just smaller so more congested) and it has had a fee for several years.

Berlin NH ATV Jamboree August 5th and 6th

Am I correct that this weekend ATV's had access to the Auto Road? There were a ton of them all over and also a group of high-end sport car enthusiast. Regarding any thread drift, any group of people using dangerous things recklessly or using things that don't belong on certain surfaces...

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

Is there a boulder near the top of Porter? I guess I have to go back. If not at the top, it's pretty close.

The 52 with a view list

My 70-year-old Brother-in-law mentioned the 52 WAV list this weekend. He thought last years Washington trip was tough and he did South Moat prior to Washington. He's is last years President of the Pioneer Valley Hiking Club who just had a group trip to Galehead where a member was rescued after...

    Drinking Beer on "The Summit"

"A" beer or beverage shouldn't make anyone drunk. For years I've said that when it comes to things I really like, (cookies, brownies, etc.) "A" means two. With Covid vaccinations now being three and four shots, "A" cookie now equals at least three. :D I agree with you overall on having summit...

    Drinking Beer on "The Summit"

Moderation and common sense would make it moot, however, as we know, common sense often is not common and if a little is good then more must be better. Walking several miles with a beer, even if kept cold will likely end up with more foam then I'd want. I did have champagne at the end of the...

Are gas prices affecting your hiking?

Short answer yes, to stay outdoors, I'm walking more in the neighborhood and there is a 1/4 acre puddle on our street with a few bass in it so I'm fishing again after a few years off. If I am looking for a training trip outside of town. I'll likely do Mt. Tom from the North. From Route 5...

    Dog Sledding Up Katahdin

It's a stunt. How many people will be in the advance team that's going to pack the trail down? I'm guessing that his route is rarely used by the winter climbing community as it involves more mileage. To make it worthwhile the advance team would need to be pretty sizable. While not the Saddle...
