Sea shells in the middle of no where in the woods

Are you suggesting sea shells migrate?

Sea shells in the middle of no where in the woods

Very interesting. Seems difficult to grasp, but the only plausible thing I can think of (short of hijinks) are birds hauling them (fresh water mussels as mentioned) and dropping them. Once airborne the wind COULD take them fairly far...maybe? The wind can take a light object pretty far so...

Foam To Make A Backpack Back Protector

Yes the Z-rest doesn't work quite as well as a Ridge-rest (do they still make them?) But the usability in all 4-seasons of such a lightweight item for inside the pack, around camp, on summits on dayhikes (painting moldings, weeding, emptying the pool skimmer, sitting on a metal bench at the...

Foam To Make A Backpack Back Protector

You could disregard a one-to-one replacement, and instead take a 1/3 piece of Ridge-Rest and slip it inside between your gear and your back. Then when you get to camp, take it out and use it to kneel on, sit on, a table, etc.

Hiker Rescue yesterday on Washington (Mt Clay)

Not defending anyone, but it's also important to remember that every day someone does a hike or a ski or a peak in weather that someone else wouldn't, and we never hear about it as it goes off without a hitch. There isn't a hard and fast temp, wind speed, moisture content, etc. that is a clear...

Here's a list I don't think exists: Mountains whose summit is a giant boulder

And I thank you both as now I have that in my head for the afternoon, which I rather enjoy.

The 52 with a view list

Ironically, the AMC 4K list was designed for this purpose - to spread people around and off the most populated peaks. Decades later, we need another list to spread people around and off the more populated peaks. Decades from now, we'll have the "Random 100 - a List of Uninteresting Places...

    Drinking Beer on "The Summit"

Worst part? By the time he got back I think I had one and then went to bed. Not the brightest decision all around :D

    Drinking Beer on "The Summit"

I can think of one time we had a couple of beers on a summit, or close by. We were out for the night near Edmunds Col and had no plans to leave until after sunrise. We actually drew a few comments and stares as we wandered about in flip flops with a beer in hand while hikers streamed by...

White Mountains on 1776 New England Map

That view was essentially what my mom looked at while at MMC in Portland. And, yes, it's not that close but you can see it very clearly from there.

Hiker asked for a rescue...via Facebook

Interesting tact to get himself out of the jam. Going back and up to Adams to find a route you know, vs. going down (which I know he tried multiple times without success). I'd guess one could say it worked, so it was the correct action to take?

    Alabama wants The AT

Interesting. I wasn't aware that the terminus has changed (both north and south before). I'd also say to truly encompass the entire mountain range, it shouldn't end at the top of Katahdin - or the top of any mountain for that matter.

    Infinite Storm Trailer...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akqcYEIXoEo Alex Honnold gives his verdict on climbing movies. Back on topic - all action movies based on natural events are over dramatized. If not, they'd be a documentary. Your typical movie fan wouldn't know the difference. If they filmed it exactly as...

Rental ATV Boom in North Country

I understand that, and maybe it's a double-whammy them. With the registered vehicles, the owner pays that fee. Having a fee charged to the renters would be similar (I guess?) as to your hike safe/parking fees?
