Groups For Hikers To Get Together

I understand that AMC is not going to list their trips in their magazine any longer, mostly because so much is being done online these days, but also because there is a publication lead time. I for one don't like making plans to lead a hike months in advance. Weeks would be more like it. I've...

    which trail to the Carters?

I've always done the road walk. At that point in the trip it's mindless and goes fast enough, and have gone clockwise. Next time I will go counter-clockwise, just to be different. Thanks for the suggestion!

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

At the rate I'm seeing new hikers on the trails, I'm not looking forward to late fall and winter...

One Day Pemi Loop - 21 hikers

This reminds me of a sport I used to participate in: off-road motorcycling. In Enduro races, four riders would start off each minute, as a way of spreading the group out. Because of abilities, the paces were different, of course, balling up in some of the more challenging terrain. These endures...

Do Limmer boots have good ankle support?

I have started wearing a compression sock on my weakest ankle. That seems to help. Hiking helps, too.

Dealing with / avoiding altitude sickness (Utah)

I've seen HACE and HAPE mentioned but not HAFE. That can take people by surprise. What is it? High Altitude Flatulenc-E. It's a bloating feeling, and then the resulting expulsion. I've brought tums to help me there. I've been at high altitude (above 15K) several times and only one time was it...

One Day Pemi Loop - 21 hikers

If one group that is more than twice the allowed size can do it, then that is the start of the decline in following the rules, which in turn makes this less of a wilderness experience. I wouldn't enjoy being passed by that many people as I hiked with all my gear.

    Mt. Whitney

There are two guiding companies in Lone Pine with very similar sounding names. When we went to do the East Face Climbing Route a few years ago we made inquiries and applied to one company, but mistakenly sent our money to the other company. The "other" company kept us and was disappointed that...

    Wood Lilies?

I've seen a single ones only. On the ledges of South Moat, in the woods on Pleasant Mountain (NE trail), and in a field south of Belknap Mountain. Has anyone seen them in clusters?

    Weed for Hikers

Not that kind of weed. This kind. Plantain has often been the go-to remedy for hikers plagued by mosquitos. Because it draws toxins from the body with its astringent nature, plantain may be crushed (or chewed) and placed as a poultice directly over the site of bee stings, bug bites, acne...

Trouble in Paradise - Belknap Range trailhead parking

I'm amazed that landowners will go through this type of trouble and disrespect and still allow access. It sounds to me, Hal, that your and your organization have done an amazing job in partnering. Thank you.

    Ledges On Chocorua

Cedar Brook used to be doable because of the shape of the stream bed and a downed tree. Before the hurricane hit the area a few years ago. Now it is a much deeper channel. The crossing is not in as far as 4 miles, but only a 20 minute walk. After crossing the stream, there is one muddy area as...

    White Ledges, Albany, NH

Date: 5/11/14 - Mother's Day Trail - White Ledges Loop We completed the loop counterclockwise. The trails were in good condition with one confusing spot by near the intersection where the old trailhead trail comes in. Some wet areas. We saw yellow and purple violets and a huge area of blooming...
