When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

Totally agree, and this should not be limited to summits. Add anywhere along any trail, viewpoints, hazards, as well. There are formal memorials from days gone by, and those may be grandfathered in. I think it could be considered that if a group wanted to sponsor a trail in honor of someone that...

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

What I see her is "another" group (not the original one we were speaking of) beginning to leave their "mark" behind. I absolutely honor people and their lives and I see the two issues as separate. Honoring the one and Trash the other. I want to be honored in a loving heart, having a mark left...

    2nd Post-Knee Surgery Hike: Mount Chocorua 9-23-13

Great report and not one of the easier ascents. Pretty along the brook, though. Your story brought back memories of leading an AMC group on that loop and the kindness of a participant as he encouraged his friend (soon to be diagnosed with Alzheimers) to climb on through her fear.

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

That might make a difference if there was foul play but also an incentive to get more looking again as foliage dies back.

Five hikers killed by giant Colorado rock slide on popular trail

Unimaginable for this to be one family. The lone survivor of a rock slide that apparently killed five members of her family -- including her mother, father and sister -- told authorities her dad saved her life, ABC's "Good Morning America" reported Tuesday. "The true hero here is her dad,"...

Are you suggesting the Union Leader had it wrong?

    Bolles Trail

I'll have to try it soon, as I've been saying for more than a few years now. Would be interested in knowing where they lit their fire.

    Bolles Trail

Another call from help in the Whites, and the Union Leader readers haven't trashed the people yet. I wonder, though, if they had flashlights or headlamps or how well they planned the timing for their trip. Also, what trail did they go up? Decided to light a fire? Oh, my...

    Nepal in October

Thanks, Pam. I appreciate your information. Melatonin does not help me, unfortunately. Did you take Diamox? I have just had contact with Dr. Hacket, a high altitude doctor who I read had done studies. Graciously he responded: Sonata has not been studied at high altitude, but its cousin Ambien...

Trail Improvements on Mt. Kinsman Trail, September 28 with Trailwrights

If your work happens to continue on the following weekend, I'd be happy to help and learn. It was amazing to see just the bit that transformed a little section on that wet 9/14.

Thanks! I have weird dreams at sea level. Can't imagine how they could get any stranger, but we'll see. I do appreciate the tips and encouragement.

    Tuckermans Ravine Trail Fatality

Yes, he was off trail, but I have found the trail still a little scary and I am experienced. The reports say he "wandered" off the trail rather than that he purposely stepped off of the trail. No matter, it is an awful thing.

    Tuckermans Ravine Trail Fatality

I hope the trail isn't closed, but perhaps a little more safety built into it. I was hoping to see that last time they did trail work there.

The Tea Houses provide blankets, and my puffy 800 fill down jacket should help. Maybe some heat packs for my toes? I'm so excited about this trip.

    Tuckermans Ravine Trail Fatality

The scroll along the bottom of WMUR read that the man "wanted off a Mt. Washington trail" - what a poor typo in this case. Sad to hear of a young man losing his life.

Just below: Day 14: Trek to EBC (5,365 m) then back to Gorakshep (7/8 hrs) About three hours beyond Lobuche we reach Gorakshep, a tiny hamlet at 5,180m, which used to be the site of the 1953 Everest expedition's base camp. We'll take a tea or lunch break at Gorekshep while checking in at the...

    Nepal in October

Thanks, David. The highest we will be is at Everest Base Camp. I've discussed the Sonata question with my doctor and they don't know and could not find any information anywhere in their system. I guess I am wondering what others have done if they take it regularly. Certainly don't want to slow...

    Nepal in October

Who here has been to Nepal in October? I'm asking because I leave for there in a few weeks and am in the process of packing and have a few questions because I can't bring my "hiking gear room" with me: 1. Sleeping Bag - our gear list says -20 degree bag. I have a 0 degree bag and a liner...
