    Gila National Forest

Thanks Stan! I appreciate the info. I didn't expect much since Gila isn't visited all that much (part of the reason I am going). I will have all the gear for cold nights, but I think I will be staying low enough to be close to water. I plan on flying in, hangin that night at a hotel, driving to...

    Gila National Forest

Hello. I just booked a trip for 9 days in Gila National Forest in New Mexico. I am planning on a few nights of car camping and 3-4 nights of backpacking. I am in decent shape. Have lots of gear. I am flying into Albuquerque on the 29th of March. I would love some ideas, preferably loops. Any...

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

Cape Breton I rode my bike around Cape Breton this past summer. There are signs all over warning about coyotes. I found it to be a bit silly, actually, but understandable all the same due to the girl being killed. I heard them in the Highlands, but never saw any.

Mount Monadnock State Park ranger Jim Johnson

Oh boy. Let's stay on track, please. Didn't mean for this to turn into an anti-gun discussion. Maybe we can stay away from the propaganda?

Mount Monadnock State Park ranger Jim Johnson

This link posted by a "Friend of The Cohos Trail" on the Trail's Facebook page. I didn't know the man, but I have heard many good things about him. Sad and darn scary. http://bostonglobe.com/metro/2012/01/09/couple-from-new-hampshire-shot-dead-arizona/jKrnr5doO6cuUx7eOa306I/story.html

    What about DEET?

Takes the finish off of instruments I once used it while playing a wedding in western ma. As I played, I would look down and watch the mosquitos land and go to town. Nothing like trying to get through some bluegrass while being devoured. I applied some Ben's and the next day the finish was...

    MSR Fuel Bottle Collar

Change the material? Could easily, with tin snips, make one out of aluminum flashing or something. Sand the edges to keep them dull... Maybe even change the shape to a triangle to save weight and space...round the corners for safety, or edge them with heat accepting duct tape. Great idea...

Connecticut hiker carried off Appalachian Trail

oh man! I used to hike alone, but then I got an imaginary friend to come along. Conversation sucks, but at least I am being safe.

    seeking solitude hiking near Rutland

Staying at Gifford Woods campground. Would like to know about quite beautiful hikes in this area. Would love lots of views and preferably a loop of 8 -10 miles. Less popular is better! Thank you

    Camping Options close to Bangor

I am going on an extended hiking and biking trip starting tomorrow and I need a nice, quiet campground somewhere very close to Bangor, ME. It can be slightly south or north of Bangor, but not too far. I will be staying tomorrow (Friday) night. I really want it to be quiet so I can get my sleep...

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

Dog There was another dog on the OTHER side of Kinsman that would follow me up from 116. Same dog? Would leave from just sound of the B&B...don't have my map with me, but was just south of Coppermine Tr.

Another Yellowstone grizzly attack, different outcome

Another idea. I say, when that mean ol' bear comes up, just pull out that six string and sing a John Denver tune. Works every time.

Another Monadnock Rescue - 2 this week

Uh Oh. I didn't mean to stir the pot. I hope it is clear that I was not referencing the "hiker's" intelligence at all. I just think the trails are poorly named and marked and make it much more confusing for...well...anyone.

Another Monadnock Rescue - 2 this week

Interrogation I have been grilled in the winter also. I went in to pay, and one ranger started in on me, "Do you realize that it is 3pm?" Stuff like that. I told him all was ok. Another ranger turned around and looked me up and down, "Don't worry about him, you can see he knows what he is...

Another Monadnock Rescue - 2 this week

Confusing Mountain I'm not too into responding to lost hiker threads, but Monadnock has got to be one of the most confusing mountains to navigate. I am not sure who named the trails, but using the "white____" concept for several of the trail names was downright idiotic. And the blazes are...

    First 2011 Cohos trailwork weekend June 3, 4 &/0r 5th

Man, that is tempting I might be game... How does weather play into the weekend? Rain or shine? Also, I am a pretty skilled carpenter, if that would be of any use.

    Whitegrass Festival, Mt Abram, Maine

Sorry about the late posting. I kept putting off posting about the gig. Sorry about that. It was a good time, lots of dancing and drinkin'. Not a very good day to hike, though. Rain and misty conditions gave way to full on rain for Sunday's gig. If you are interested in coming out to some of...
