15-Month Old Out to Set the AT Record

I think I ran into these folks at Lakes. What an amazing family experience to have!

I Got No Dog in This Fight

Maybe, maybe not - a leash is only so useful if the human holding it gets too close to the other dog - and I've seen dogs get tangled in the leashes, making it harder to separate them (not an argument against leashes, just to say you still need to keep your brain in drive while using one)

Plastic bags with dog droppings left at trailheads?

I've been doing the under-bumper, too, since I realized some people seem to see the bag-at-trailhead as a sign that they should leave their bags there (I've definitely seen piles accumulate over time on trails I use alot).

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

+1. One of the more interesting and thought-provoking articles I read related (sort-of) to Gerry's story was this one on "lost person behavior": http://www.smcmsar.org/downloads/Lost%20Person%20Behavior.pdf (I could have sworn I first saw it here, but now I can't find the original post)...

Why are there still summit registers?

I don't bushwhack (yet), but would removing the registers really impact the other issues at all? I was under the impression that people were after the summits themselves, so pulling the registers wouldn't lessen traffic, let alone change the behavior of the folks who make the trip.

never been in summer: do people swim in the Lakes of the Clouds ?

This is what I've heard about the Lakes - not illegal, but not great for the ecosystem to have a bunch of sweaty, bug dope and sunscreen-covered bodies steeping in it. Less of an issue at Gem Pool, which is ice cream-headache cold and really lovely after a hike.

    Looking for easy backpacking suggestions

The Eliza Brook Shelter (and tent sites) is about a 3.9 mile hike via the Reel Brook trail. A little longer than you're asking for, but from memory it was a pretty moderate hike and quite pretty as well.

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

I assumed they got a copy of the Warden's report/file, which is referenced in the article. FOIA?

    Glacier Advice

Only been once, and we were in and around the GTTSR (multi-day through Sperry and Gunsight area, day hikes at the Garden Wall, and Iceberg Lake...), but I will say that there are probably no bad hikes in Glacier. Also, this message board is a tremendous resource...

4-day controlled deer hunt approved in Blue Hills State Reservation (MA)

Just a heads-up for folks who frequent the Blue Hills. Dates for the hunt are: Monday, 11/30, Tuesday, 12/1, and Monday 127 and Tuesday 12/8 More info: http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/10/14/four-days-deer-hunting-approved-blue-hills-state-reservation (subscription may be required)...

Mt. McKinley officially to be renamed back to Mt. Denali

Should make Alaska happy, they've been pushing for this for years, if I'm not mistaken.

    Glacier NP Must See Recommendations

This, I think - http://home.nps.gov/applications/glac/cgstatus/cgstatus.cfm If you click on the names of the campgrounds in the "current info" section, it takes you to a page that will let you look at historical data for that location - i.e., the same week/weekend this time last year.

    Glacier NP Must See Recommendations

Holy cow, I'm jealous - had an amazing trip to Glacier a few years back. Definitely look into the walk-ups as Brian suggested. Our permit app was rejected too, but we were still able to get Sperryx2 - Gunsight Lake as a walk-up. I found this link very helpful...

Pop up as a base camp for family hiking?

We did a lot of car camping in a pop-up Starcraft as a kid, and I loved it. I don't recall camping in the winter, but it was definitely comfortable in early Spring/late Fall. I don't think the popping up and down was any worse than dealing with a tent (and one would hope the technology has...

Mt. Washington Argument Becomes a Rescue...

I read that this morning and wondered if the "pre-existing condition" was mental-health related. Not that it would justify leaving someone behind, but I can see it leading people to want a little distance.

    Umbagog: water, other q's

Haven't been in years (sadly), but we always stayed at one of the remote sites farthest from the main campground. Always took the pontoon ride, and from what I recall, the farther out your site is, the more the ride costs. Which makes sense, because some of those sites are a haul and they need...

Beta-test of new bear-avoidance measure in Glacier NP

A bunch of rescues last weekend

It's also worth pointing out that just as we are all, as hikers, capable of making mistakes (and hopefully learning from them), trip leaders make mistakes (and hopefully learn from them) as well. Generally, my experience has been that it's people who are newer to a leadership role or a body of...
