Snoring and staying at an AMC hut advice?

Depending on where you're going and when you'll be there, they might be able to put you in a bunkroom with fewer people if you let them know, but I guarantee you will not be the only one sawing logs :) I learned my lesson about bringing earplugs early on. I was in a room full of women at...

Black fly reports for your area?

Out and bitey at Cardigan yesterday, but fortunately there weren't too many of them.

    Glacier National Park Recommendations

+1 for the Highline and Iceberg Lake. I've also heard great things about the Siyeh Pass, but we weren't able fit it on the agenda. You might want to visit http://glacier.nationalparkschat.com/phpBB3/index.php - it's a small group but there's a lot of great advice on where to go and what to do.

    Bug spray advice

Has anyone had any experience/luck with allegedly bug-repellent clothing? (Ex-officio bugs-away, for example). Do they make a difference?

    boots with support

For what it's worth, the last time I was boot-shopping, I found that Lowa's men's boots (I tend to do better with men's boots due to the shape of my foot) generally had higher ankles than other brands. Whether that will translate into the kind of support you're looking for, I don't know, but...

Sport bra alternative for winter hiking

I've had luck with a mesh-panel bra from title 9. I can't recall the name off the top of my head, but having the mesh instead of the traditional thick, lycra-based material keeps it from holding quite so much sweat. I find underwire support helps, too, as having the girls mashed against my...

CAUTION for people who hike with dogs

My heart is broken for you and the rest of Bookah's family. My deepest sympathies to all of you. Thanks for the warning, I'll add hp to my list of doggie first aid gear. (I had to give hydrogen peroxide to our first dog, Griffin, after she got into some rat poison in the basement of the place...

Where would you buy (Location, location, location...) ??

Are you interested in/willing to rent when you're not using it yourself? If you are, proximity to downhill skiing and/or lakes might become more important. Obviously it'll cost more, but you'd be able to charge higher fees (from my experience as a renter, proximity to XC facilities, while...

    The 20 best cold-weather dogs

All of our dogs - our first two, who were Keeshonds, and the Cattle Dog mix and the Lab we have now - have always had a much harder time with all the road salt here in Somerville than with snow and even ice out in the woods. I think the salt itself is an irritant, and since it lowers the...

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

Cool, glad I asked for a clarification. So yes, only 300K per year. Totally agree the amount of time and energy wasted on this debate is ridiculous. Also totally agree it's pocket change and New Hampshire should simply write it into their budget. The problem is that is hasn't. The state...

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

What exactly are you saying is broken? Your comments seem to indicate that you think the way search and rescue operations are staffed and organized is the issue; that they're too expensive. Based on the numbers NH provides, I'd say that's hard to support. According to F&G's own site...

    Nylon vests

Have you tried something like Cabela's or another hunting/fishing outfitter? A game or guide vest might fit the bill, and you may be able to find one in blaze orange if you need visibility as well.

    Moose Die-Off

The wouldn't have to be aware of a temperature shift to shift their territory in response to the accompanying change in food availability, though, would they?

    Government shutdown...

Acadia NP, the parking lots at trail heads are closed, but people are just parking along the roads and using the trails and carriage roads anyway - and there doesn't seem to be any effort being made to stop them. Oh, and bikers are making abundant use of the loop road.

    Acadia loop road closed

We were just up there last week. People are definitely still using the hiking trails and carriage roads, too. The trailhead lots may be closed, but people are just parking along the sides of the roads (not the loop road, of course). A friend got a warning note for driving around a barrier to...

    REI Changes Its Warranty Policy

fwiw, REI will still take back your gear at any time if they fail due to a defect. You just can use the 'shoes to a natural death and then bring them back because you don't feel like paying for a new pair. (not suggesting you would)

    The Power Pot

From the quickest of looks, I think the difference is that the Biolite is a stove while Power Pot is a pot that works with different stoves, yes? So you could use this with your current set-up. Or combine the two, and light up your entire campsite....

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

I think the 7th principle is also worth considering when we're talking about trying to set up personal memorials in the mountains. I respect and admire efforts to honor service men and women (fallen or otherwise). That is a noble intent. And I firmly believe that wilderness heals, so I...
