    Hunting Season

Thanks for the reminder and the link :) While we're at it, here's Maine, http://www.maine.gov/ifw/hunting_trapping/pdfs/2011HuntingSeasonsChart.pdf and Vermont...

Missing Dog Alert (8/27), Waterville Valley, Drakes Brook Trail - Found

It might make sense to call the owners first. Some dogs (mine, for instance) are drawn to other dogs if it's only one or two, but feel threatened by larger numbers. I'm sure they'd appreciate the help, though.

Missing Dog Alert (8/27), Waterville Valley, Drakes Brook Trail - Found

This is what SARdog posted in another thread (can't find the link, but I'd posted the text elsewhere): Try to stay put if you can. The dog can cover ground a lot faster than you, and you're unlikely to follow it successfully very far in the New England woods. The dog may tire of chasing that...

    WMNF Closure!

Personally, I don't think the threat of lawsuits had much to do with this. Such suits really are rare, and to my knowledge the few that have been filed have not been successful. Closing the WMNF allows the forest service to let most of their own people avoid being out in what could be a very...

    AMC Closing Facilities for Irene

I was wondering this myself - although maybe they don't want to leave them open and thereby encourage people to try to "ride it out"? The thru-hikers are on my mind. My boss is currently about 2/3 of the way through the 100-mile wilderness (or she should be, based on her last journal entry and...

    Irene Storm Track

I would not want to be a thru-hiker this weekend.

Hornet Nest on Thoreau Falls Trail

A friend and her dog got nailed by yellow jackets (we think) on the way up Goose Eye Trail right below the first peak. The dogs were in the trees and she was bringing up the rear - we think the dogs got the things riled up and she just got the worst of it. Multiple stings for both (the poor...

    Earthquake in Virginia 8-23

8th floor in downtown Boston - felt the building sway slightly. Nothing compared to what our friends in CA or NZ deal with, but pretty startling for someone who's not used to it.

    Are poles worth it?

I use them most of the time - going up, going down, going flat...There are definitely places where I stow them so I can use my hands, or the trail is too tight for them not to be a pain, but most other times I have them out. Same benefits that others have noted going up and down, and I also...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I'm not saying we shouldn't look at whether there are ways to improve visitor safety, but I think it's worth keeping in mind that no one is sacrificing anyone else for their own personal enhanced experience. It's not as if we have an "experienced hiker" contingent insisting on a more wild and...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

Or, a pictorial or physical warning - say, a nice, stout railing around the viewing area? There is no possible written or *************** that will prevent some people from choosing to ignore it. Either because their being a ******* (not 5 seconds after I took the attached photo, a man I had...

Mass residents: Take a Survey to Help Set Recreation Priorities in MA

Mass residents: Take a Survey to Help Set Recreation Priorities in MA

(I copied the text from the NEMBA website, but the survey covers all outdoor activities) DCR's parent, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, has published a survey that will help them set funding priorities for public recreation and is a requirement to remain eligible for...

Is it the height of Thru Hiker Season?

I know my boss ("Glad Gal" if you follow Trailjournals.com) and her hiking partner expect to hit the whites by this weekend. From her most recent entries, it seems like there are a sizable number of other north-bound thru-hikers just ahead and behind her.

    School trip suggestions

Might be a little further than you want to go, but what about Dogtown up in Gloucester? Depending on what your kids get excited about, it might be fun for them to explore the old foundations, etc. Hope the kids have a great time, wherever they go!

Good Hike To Do w/ My 9-Year Old Son

I'd vote for 13 Falls. It's a long hike in - 8.2 miles from Lincoln Woods - but there's very little elevation gain along the way (book time is just under 5 hours). I don't have children myself, but from the number of kids I've seen there, I think it's pretty doable. Lots of streams along the...
