    The status of blazing?

I can think of several wilderness area trails with blazes. Not sure if they are just old and pre date the standards or were unauthorized. The exception to be sure but they're out there. I'm sure that has confused more than a few inexperienced hikers wondering where the blazes went and why...

    The status of blazing?

I find the reflective blazes very useful and at least in the places I've seen it you can get by with fewer blazes because they are easier to spot from a distance, especially in the dark. So overall it junks up the trail less and is an improvement over paint and or plastic. If you're going to...

    The status of blazing?

I haven't done a ton of hiking in the Adirondacks and Catskills (maybe 18 or 20 peaks combined) and I thought the blazing was excellent. Use very conspicuous metal disks, frequent enough spacing and easy to spot by day or headlamp. And they're color coded for North-South trails, East West...

    Outdoor movie thread

Thank you. I've been seeing this for weeks and thought it was the trailer so I've been ignoring it like a dumb ass. A decent little mini-documentary but a bit brief and not the best Arc'Teryx movie I've seen. I figured if it was going to be in theaters, even small ones, that it would have been...

    Mt. Chocorua and Middle Sister.

Calling JustJoe. Calling JustJoe. Come In. Over. I'm sure JustJoe has 100 photos of the exact scene you describe but this was the best I could do. Having always seen it from the road I was surprised at how narrow it was. Was like a shark fin versus the pyramid shape it appears to be from the...

Firefighter dies while battling brush fire on Lamentation Mountain in Connecticut along the New England National Scenic Trail

CT is really, really dry right now. There are ponds and brooks I'm used to seeing water in generally all the time and they are bone dry right now. Several brooks in the local park I walk in look like trails. You literally kick up dust walking in them. This has been a near perfect OCT for...

    It's not a Direttissima, it's a Delicatessen 9/14-9/28/2024

I know that route! One of my favorite Isolation trips several years ago was a really hot day in July all the way up Rocky Branch, over to Isolation, Davis (which I prefer) and Stairs Mtn all the way back down via Davis Path, Stairs Col, ending with an amazing near dark swim in a perfect shoulder...

    It's not a Direttissima, it's a Delicatessen 9/14-9/28/2024

I keep coming back to this post and it really has me imagining some sort of smaller scale project of this nature. So conditioned to think about climbing peaks when there is so much else to see. So many of your photos hit that point home. I find myself logging into Gaia after every glance through...

    Wild River road

I think there was a different order for the campground but I didn't research it. I remember a map blocking off just the campground but I noticed the map attached to the order you referenced blcosk the entire road, which is what made me do a double take. I will say when I went through there in...

    Wild River road

Are you posting this because I said Sierra could do the road walk or because of the 2 year length of the order (which I assume is implying May 31, 2026 as the potential reopening date with this notice being effective May 31, 2024)? The ban is strictly for motor vehicle use correct? Hikers and...

    Wild River road

I think JoshandBaron mentioned in a prior post it would be at least 2025 before work would proceed. I was last there in early July of this year and at that point no work had begun and no equipment was staged. I think the road walk to Burnt Mill Brook is only 2.2 miles. If you want to spice it...

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

The Avalanche Lake area is gorgeous and has fun trails around the perimeter. I think you'd like the peaks in the Great Range. I'd personally get out there more often but the rides are a challenge for me (4h -4h 30m one way) and parking can be really tough.

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

I found some good YouTube videos of it earlier. Should have posted the links but I was heading out the door for work. It is definitely a significant climb, far more difficult and dangerous than Huntington Ravine it seemed to me at least. I think the huge slab at the top was actually what looked...

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

How does Trap Dike compare to a trail like Huntington Ravine on Washington or the Great Gulf headwall where the trail is the brook for a 1/4 mile? Most of the photos I've seen of Trap Dike make it look steep but not too bad but apparently there is a "crux" moment in the middle that is pretty...

    Artist Bluff? Paid Parking?

I thought they were already doing that? Is that a free lot? I went through there once last year (looking for a brewery I had heard of in the area on the way to the Kinsman Trail - Iron Furnace Brewing I believe) and it was absolute pandemonium there - barrels and tape blocking street...

    Sierras Worst Nightmare!

A few years ago I did the Ridge (up Falling Waters, down Greenleaf) purposely on a crappy early March day (temps 20's to low 30's, 20-30 mph sustained winds with higher gusts, and rain/sleet/fog) to test my gear and general preparedness for such things should I ever find myself in that scenario...

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Messner is an absolute legend. Love watching his interviews and documentaries. His perspective on everything is spot on in my opinion.

I am a VFTT member, I still hike, and I did that Roberts Shaw Loop based on Sierra's recommendation! Doh!!

    Status of the AT

It certainly looks bleak down there. The river valleys really got trashed. I did a job down near Asheville in March and then drove over to Tennessee on Rte 40. Seeing a lot of videos of that road pretty much gone in many places now. Lot of highways down there wind up and down river valleys. I...
