    Caps Ridge

Slapping a blaze on a tree every 100-200 ft is LESS work than brushing out a corridor? Never done blazing before but brushing would seem to be pretty labor intensive, especially if it is not done often. I love overgrown trails and wilderness areas so I'd be fine if they stopped both. :)

    (Another) New AMC Logo!

Only in this forum can a random mention of a logo lead to a spirited discussion about racism, passive aggressive snubs, vitriol, personal attacks and also have detailed research back to the 1800's complete with term paper quality reference to sources and photographic references to patches older...

I'm guessing Fabiano's are old? I don't even know what they are.... :D

    Fall Foliage 2024

That was another possibility I was kicking around but I only have SAT and can't do an overnight. I did a loop through there a few years back (Summer not Fall) going up Nancy Pond, heading down into the wilderness and taking the Desolation Trail up Carrigain with a return via the Signal Ridge...

Tara Dower Sets Overall Fastest Known Time on Appalachian Trail

All of these hikes are impressive but I am always far more impressed by the self supported ones. I feel like those are the only ones worthy of recognition.

    Fall Foliage 2024

Yah most of the places I've been the past few weeks color has been very flat. I think it's the lack of moisture but I really have no clue either. It's been quite warm too which I'm guessing is also a factor. I Google it every year and of course forget what I learned every year. I'm...

    Fall Foliage 2024

So it is looking like this coming weekend will be my only chance to get to NH for awhile so I want to get up there for my annual foliage trip. I was up there 2 weeks ago and color had started but it was pretty flat and not overly wide spread (was in the Franconia/Zealand area - wetlands had a...

    Water along the MSG

I was on Monadnock and many of it's lesser traveled side paths Sunday and it was extremely dry but there was still at least a trickle in official brooks. I haven't done the MSG in it's entirety (I've done maybe 2/3 of it over the years) but I recall numerous sources that I'd expect will have...

Garmin changes inReach plans and fees

I've been using the Zoleo for a few years now and like it overall. They have Cellular/WiFi/Satellite messaging, weather, custom messages and non-emergency medical texting service (in addition to the SOS feature for big time problems). It works seamlessly and has a good feature set. My only gripe...

    Bad One on Madison

Indeed. If I recall, the vertical ascent on that route is well over 4500 ft to Madison with all the ups and downs.

    Bad One on Madison

I like just about everything that isn't Valley Way heading up to Madison. VW is not a horrible trail by any means but all the other routes are far more enjoyable. Watson is another interesting one. For whatever reason I tend to descend that trail though.

    Caps Ridge

Unless it fell off it used to be engulfed by some scrub just before breaking tree line. I just went down that way a few weeks ago but I didn't really notice if it was there. The blazes on that trail have been faded for a long time. Route is pretty straightforward though so and there are a lot of...

    Clingmans Dome is now Kuwohi

North Carolina is worth the effort. I tend to agree with your assessment of the South for the little I have seen of it. The Ridge encompassing Mount Mitchell North to Celo Knob ( I think the Black Mountains or Black Crest Mountains) is a really nice hike that will have you thinking NH only...

    Bad One on Madison

The Osgood Trail is one of my favorite trails in New England, especially the section above tree line.

    Wild River Road Status

Even when the road was open you wouldn't generally see more than half a dozen people on a weekend, with the exception of fisherman close to the campground. It has been slowly getting "discovered" since Covid but it is still one of the quieter areas in NH/ME.

Garmin changes inReach plans and fees

They just came out with a new model that supports photos and audio messages so they're probably getting out in front of the increased data traffic.

    Bog Bridges?

I think you should make a companion video of when bog bridges go wrong, i.e. the see-saw, flip ups, the rotted "V" and other disasters. An appendix video of all the bizarre bog bridges in the Mahoosuc Range would be pretty cool too, i.e. the sloped ones with grip pegs, the wacky side hill ones...

    Wild River Road Status

I didn't the link but thanks. I trust your info and wasn't questioning what you said. It was just a buzz kill. I really like that area and it is a much more difficult haul getting in there now, at least to the areas I enjoy anyway. And you are right to be pessimistic on these things. You have...

Looking for a new hiking map app

I'll tell you what is even stranger: since I clicked that link you gave me it works fine. Chrome updates itself all the time so maybe there was a corrupt reference to something somewhere?? I was curious so I closed my browser, cleaned the history, cookies, etc and relaunched CalTopo and it...
