    Wild River Road Status

Was it for 2 years? I thought they had just written it off for 2024? So it will be closed in 2025 too? Major bummer.

    Wild River Road Status

When I was there on 7/4/24 they hadn't done anything at all yet. I'm guessing this got pushed into 2025 in favor of more pressing issues.

Looking for a new hiking map app

That is interesting because those areas in NH are definitely NOT coming up for me in CalTopo. I was in the Dolly Sods Wilderness area yesterday and that came up fine. I wonder if it has something to do with my browser configuration. Very strange. Oh well.

RMC Log Cabin Shelter on Lowes path closure

I haven't done Lowes Path in quite awhile but remember it as wet, muddy, meandering and generally annoying in the lower sections. As Brian mentioned though, once you near tree line and above it is a fine route. In terms of the forest, there are a lot of really underappreciated trails in the...

    Less daylight every day now

The heat was definitely a factor this Summer. It impacted some of my plans. I generally like all the seasons and the pluses and minuses each offers But those long days where it's light after 9PM and again before 4AM are special. Love putting in a huge day and having it be light out the whole...

    Less daylight every day now

There's always that moment for me somewhere in mid August where this inescapable truth sneaks up and hits me over the head. "Aw crap. Summer is over." :(

Looking for a new hiking map app

The Forest Service layer on CalTopo always populated maps that were very much like the paper maps for pretty much everywhere I've ever gone. Showed trails and trail names, elevations, peak names, etc. That is no longer the case. And relax. I'm not revealing the secret locations of your favorite...

Looking for a new hiking map app

I noticed on CalTopo (Free Web Version) of late that many of the areas I look at do not load anything in the Forest Service layer. Not sure if there is some sort of issue with the USFS, if it's a licensing thing now that most apps have a paid version, etc. I used to use that feature often in...

Happy News (for the Pinnah family)

Monroe's has the best breakfast I've ever had. I try to stop there for a Western omelette, home fries and white toast whenever I find myself in the area around breakfast time. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it....

    VA hiking

Grayson Highlands is AMAZING. I've been wanting to get back down there for awhile to do a full loop of the whole thing. (I did an out and back from Elk Garden to the Wilburn Ridge). Mt Rogers is wooded but I found the short spur trail very scenic.

    Bears Doin the Pemi Loop

Based on the volume of people who do that loop and the bear "hangs" I've seen along the way this isn't much of a surprise. Just hope it doesn't get to the level where the have to start killing bears as a result of this laziness/ignorance.

I have all the gear I need

Overnights and multi day hikes are what get the wheels turning for me too. I have had a few distinct "ultralight" phases in between "comfy" phases over the past 10 years. After all this time, I think what I'm really after is SIMPLE, whatever the weight is (although often times simple = lighter)...

I have all the gear I need

A couple of years ago I did I hike in the Showangunks in NY and had just replaced by Black Diamond Flik Lok poles with brand new ones. The Bruins playoff game was coming on at 3PM and with the 2h 45m ride I had back to my house I was really pushing to get back to my car after a 5AM start (was a...

I have all the gear I need

The % off sales have definitely come back strong with the outdoor companies after the post Covid price surge. I get emails daily with pretty nice discounts. Is indeed a good time to get stuff if you need it.

I did not know that. I would have followed more closely if I had realized. Still trying to wrap my head around this. He provided so much knowledge on so many things. Going to be a huge void going forward....

Peakbagger - In remembrance July 2024

Holy crap. Terrible news indeed. He helped me out quite a bit on this forum over the years and brought an enormous amount of news and knowledge to this forum over the years. Tough news.

    Kinsman Pond Overnight - July 15-16, 2024

Hah! I had a similar experience. Did a Bonds/Twins traverse SUN/MON with a friend who is trying to finish her 48 4k's this Summer. I've been overnighting a bit this year and up until 2-3 weeks ago was doing my normal thing and feeling fit. I wound up struggling a lot more than I was expecting on...

    Kinsman Pond Overnight - July 15-16, 2024

Awesome video (as usual). That route is the way I went to finish my 48 4k's back in July 2013. Really enjoyed those trails. Brought back some nice memories "hiking" it again. Might have to revisit this one.
