    Evo Ascents

Thanks for the explanation of what broke on your snowshoes. I have an older pair of Lightening Ascents (along with several other brands), so I appreciate hearing other peoples experiences and were I might expect to see problems. Also, I should point out that I indeed noticed that your original...

    Evo Ascents

Sorry, but what exactly broke on your Lightning Ascents? Did you explain the problem in this thread and I missed it or do you have a link to a place where you did describe the problems? Just from my prospective, it's difficult to have a useful discussion when the issue is unclear.

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

Thanks for that interesting history and prospective on LT winter hiking. I'm one of those elusive VT winter hikers. Typically, except for Camels Hump and Mansfield, I'll see old tracks up to a 1/4 mile from the trail head and then they generally stop. I suspect that the northern sections where I...

Mt Mansfield via Sunset Trail 2/4/12

Trail Conditions: Well, Mt Mansfield was looking magnificent today. Although the mountain looked snowy, the snow wasn't very deep. The trail had between four and six inches of snow cover, pretty consistently below the treeline, with occasional drifts off-trail. Above the treeline, there was a...

Mt Mansfield via Sunset Trail 12/26/11

Trail Conditions: There is a winter parking lot that has been plowed, several hundred feet before the gate. Four wheel drive vehicles can still get up to the park gate. The trail had between six and eight inches of snow cover, pretty consistently below the treeline, with the deepest snow...

    Long Trail 12

I agree with Guthook, there's nothing wrong with hiking the LT in late July. In fact, I would say that late July and early August is the ideal times to thru hike the LT. June is usually rainy and has way more bugs. And, in September the trail can be dry and it's a bit harder to find water...

Camels Hump via Burrows Trail 12/10/11

Trail Conditions: The trail had between two and four inches of snow cover, pretty consistently from the trail head and just below the summit. Streams are still flowing at almost all elevations, so obtaining water did not require a stove. At the moderate to higher elevations, there was a layer of...

    If I'd Only Known

If only he'd known... how to pitch a tarp. I can't get past the description of his tarp-camping experience. He wrote that he "draped it over a boulder and spent an hour lining the edges with rocks..." And then on "the third night, the wind was so strong that the tarp flapped itself to death...

Swiss can ban naked hiking, court rules

Wow - nevermind the nude hiking, this is the part of the article that surprised me the most: "Appenzell is a deeply devout and conservative canton - it only granted women the right to vote in 1990." Yikes.

    Plane wreck Mt. Cleveland, Vermont

Interesting. It's always fascinating to find unexpected pieces of history. Do you have any pictures of the plane? I know that there are all sorts of lists of plane crashes. You may be able to find out more about the incident online.

AMC article on naming in the White Mountains

Great little article! Thanks for sharing it. Although I'm an AMC member, I rarely remember to read most of their articles and I didn't realize that AMC Outdoors has some exclusive web-only content. That was a good one. Another resource that I really like for place name information is the USGS...

Free Long Trail Guide book - 26th edition (2007)

Have you noticed any major changes between the 26th and 27th Edition of the Long Trail Guide? As usual, I know that I'm going to end up buying the new edition in the spring, but I haven't had a chance to get over to the club headquarters to take a look at it yet.

Molly Stark’s Balcony via the Long Trail 11/05/11

Trail Conditions: The trail was generally in good shape, with occasional patches that were wet, muddy, or icy. There was one large tree blown down across the trail, which could be walked underneath rather easily. The higher elevations had a mixture of icy rock and a minimal amount of snow...

You know you are NOT a peakbagger when...

In the spirit of this thread, perhaps we should create a list for non-peakbaggers. I propose the New England Making Every Summit is Silly (Nemesis) List. Rules of the Nemesis List 1) The Nemesis List begins on 11/11/11; 2) Everybody starts with zero points; 3) Every time you hit a summit on...
