Highpoint: Louisiana. Driskill Mountain (535 ft). June 28, 2010

So are you doing all 50 this summer? I grew up in coastal Louisiana so to us, Driskill was a mountain and they were all Yankees up there in the Bible Belt. We would prop a stick in our handlebars when riding on trails to catch the banana spider webs. It is SO much creepier at night but...

    Vermont Waterfalls

Very nice. Great photos. I enjoyed swimming and jumping at Red Rocks in S. Burlington last Friday and will definitely head back.

2010: year of the deer fly?

Deer flies are worse than usual in SoVT. We've lost hundreds of thousands of bats to white nose syndrome in the last few years so I suspect that we will soon see a proliferation of nocturnal bugs as well.

    Rescues - East vs. West

I would have said the opposite - and maybe I am merely projecting. My belief is that most climbers and hikers would rather be left alone. I am much happier with the den-mothers off Katahdin and being allowed to climb it like any other mountain than being told when and how I can climb it. I...

    Rescues - East vs. West

Kevin, I get your point based on those comments but I have not seen such openness when they imposed climber's fees on Denali and Rainier. Most climber groups instead proposed to scale back rescues but (IMHO) the rescue bureaucracy wanted to preserve their jobs and funding. The topic is...

Highpoint: Pennsylvania. Mt. Davis, June 12, 2010

I really like your posts and reading about your adventures with the girls. Congrats on getting them out so much. Every year I think that I should have knocked off more easy highpoints with my kids when they were younger and then a year later find out I still haven't done anything. You are...

did you feel the earthquake today ?

Yep. It just kept going and going. It's the first "real" quake I've felt since living in AK.

    Via Feratta

I fell in love with Via Feratta's in the Dolomites and thought this was pretty cool. Well that, and I just love looking at that Mexican limestone. http://www.rockclimbing.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2304897;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;page=unread#unread

Vern Tejas reclaims his Seven (Eight) Summits Speed Record.....

Nope, old Russian Ice fifi tools and some weird under-knee aider attachments. It was a cool system for super long, dead vertical ice because it was restful but basically aid climbing. Separately, I did move through a big purchase of those classic '90's Russian screws and pitons. I've heard...

Vern Tejas reclaims his Seven (Eight) Summits Speed Record.....

Way to go Vern! He is certainly the real deal and once carried a bicycle to the top of Aconcaugua as "Training" for the Iditasport. Vern and I used to do mountain rescue and climbed a bit together. In fact, we almost launched a company based on some old Soviet climbing tools he had. He's...

kautz route on rainier conditions vs Ing Direct or DC ?

FWIW - This may be a bit geeked out but it has served me well in the past; you can dig up, say, 2 months of avy and weather reports online and sketch out your snow pack based on what you read in the weather reports. Then compare with what you read in the avy reports and you will know what the...

    Denali 2010, a sucess!

When my wife and I were at 17 the summit was stormy so we hung out. There were two guided groups near us who set up a volleyball net and we had a day of low oxygen volleyball. Climbing Magazine later published a photo of the game that someone sent in. We also had time to explore towards the...

    Travel Insurance

I have carried insurance from these guys in the past. I agree with you in thinking it was always the responsible thing to do. Although boaters and hikers get free rescues without being villified in the media, I never wanted to be that climber strung-up as a bad example...

Wall Face - Indian Pass shelter

The route was great - thanks for the beta. The whole trip delivered as promised; remote, high, wild and pretty straight forward. Those blackflies are from hell. I was very disappointed at the condition of the lean-to's. They are falling apart and will cost far more to fix than preventative...
