Freedom of the New England Hills

I support the addition of bushwhacking. Also suggest at least one forced winter bivy. I felt great freedom after realizing there is a big divide between misery and death and I only needed to fear that latter.

    North Country Economic Update

:) I also live in a similar place so have sympathies. There is clearly a deep difference between the tourist towns and the ones that aren't. The running joke is; "who says there are no jobs in Vermont, heck most people I know have 2 or 3".

    North Country Economic Update

Why, what did the North Country ever do to deserve more? Seems to me there is little more than forests and low wage workers to exploit and they have a tough time even getting takers on that.

Trap Dike - Best Hike in ADKs - hike or climb?

... and Wikipedia pretty much nails it. TD is Class 4.

Trap Dike - Best Hike in ADKs - hike or climb?

I have done TD several times, solo, sometimes with a rope and sometimes not. I would recommend bringing a rope to anyone and I think the guidebook should recommend that. IMHO, luring people into danger with understatement is reckless and most descriptions of the TD come very close.

    No better place on earth.

    Hiking Juneau Alaska

You can't really go wrong there. If all else fails, try Mendenhall glacier and hike up the ridge, up and up and up on the right hand side. Eagle Crest ski resort has nice views. Or that big mtn right above town. I'm sure there are better trails but it's all pretty awesome. Enjoy.

Climbers killed in terrorist attack on Nange Parbat

Such a tragedy. Some of the world's greatest mountains may be 'off limits' for decades to come.

Gothics East Face, South Face and North Face on 2013 June 15

    Fabulous TR. Great job.

    solo 100-mile

Eh, don't worry about it. Nothing ever happens when you hike with other people, you've got no more objective danger alone. Just go and have fun.

The 10 Best Dog Breeds for Runners

Interesting that they didn't mention the world's greatest K9 endurance athletes; the Alaskan Husky. The dogs that run the Iditarod, etc. Ah, probably because it's a "village mix" and not an AKC breed. Coon hounds can run forever but they become absolutely insane once they get the scent of...

    Dorset Ridge Trail

My topo shows a trail that I've always wanted to do. It heads due south off the summit. I've considered accessing from the Hollow but have never done it. I remember a 4wheeler trail at the top heading down in that direction. I imagine it is poorly marked and criss-crossed with other trails...

Bostonion attempting 7 Summits and both poles speed record

The older I get the more I think this sort of monumental, yet vain, effort would be much better spent feeding the poor or fighting disease. And I think I'm not saying this out of envy.

    Crater Rim To Car...St Helens

Very nice! Did you peak over the crater rim? It's very cool. Very refreshing to see some non-eastcoast photos.

Ice climber dies on Mount Washington

Oh, but the climbing mags make soloing seem SO cool.

How does outdoor recreation impact the economy?

It's very interesting and publicly I'll support the numbers but between us, they seem stretched; they count the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for $800million and Central Park for $400million plus about 4,000 jobs.
