    3 hour hike, RT 2 NH/ME ???

Thanks for the help. Dilly-dallying in the morning plus an impatient family whittled my window down to 2 hours. I found some ridge trail which provided a workout and lovely views of forest. So much for big plans. But, I made the Maine ferry and am now island bound for a few days.

Sen.Chuck Schumer wants ADKs patrolled by Reaper Drones

One of my most memorable mountain experiences is I was in Alaska on a monstrous glacial shelf and two Warthogs came over the top of the peak 5,000' above me, came scraping down the face, cut a 40-degree lift into horizontal, ripped, skimming across the glacier, over my head with a massive roar...

3 climbers, 1 injury: Who stays or goes ?

So if that's the scenario, you're stuck there in that situation, here's my memory of rescue doctrine; First, Waiting gets you nothing. There has to be an immediate and strong forward force of self-rescue. Of course that sort of diligence might have helped them reverse hypothermia in the...

    Securing a Kayak? A bike?

The straps look good but my boat doesn't have a "handle" to run the cable under. I was thinking about drilling and putting in a swaged wire and that's when I thought I should ask for advice. The holes are going to create small leaks and I'd like to do it right the first time. This is pretty...

    Securing a Kayak? A bike?

I'm working several days per week in the big city of Los Burlington and want to bring my kayak up for evening paddles. Any suggestions on how I secure it to my car so it doesn't get stolen? Also, I plan to wrap my bike to my rack with a cable and lock - any more elegant methods out there...

    Denali disaster

I used to climb with the guide, Dave S. and even 20 years ago he was considered one of the very best on the mountain. He did the 2nd successful winter solo of Denali but upped the ante by doing it on the West Rib. Dave's a curmudgeonly crank but I would trust my life to him. Guess it goes to...

    Best Hikes in the US!

Wow, what a list. Highly exhaustive. Best trail I ever hiked; Goat Trail in the Wrangell Mtns of Alaska, Chitistone Valley. It's an amazing 10" wide wildlife (mountain goat) trail scratched into a mix of shale and clay traversing the steep inside of a ?5,000 ' deep canyon. Along with...

    Hiking Jokes

In coastal Alaska there are a mix of Grizzly bears and brown bears. Regardless of accuracy, the joke goes like this... How do you tell if you're being chased by a Brown bear or a Grizzly bear? Climb up a tree and if it climbs up after you it's a grizzly. If instead the bear just pulls the...

Drilling in OH State Parks & Forests

I keep thinking; Hey, it's Ohio. I've seen Alaska drilled. I also realize that the true cost of our gasoline is north of $10/gallon (including associated costs of defense, clean-up, regulation, clean air, etc). I also don't get the outrage. We have mined our national lands for ever. Our...
