    Water Bottles -- 2022

I will add that, in my experience: A hot beverage (coffee, cocoa, soup) in a steel vacuum bottle ("Thermos") in my pack will stay hot (too host to drink immediately upon pouring) for more than half the day, including a 2-ish hour drive. Boiled water in Nalgene + cozy will be still warm by...

    Handwarmers?

I can't get them to stay put in my mittens or gloves. They end up folded in half around the tips of my fingers most of the time. I guess if one is just sitting a parent-child soccer game they might stay put... I know some gloves/mittens have a pocket for them, but I don't own any of those...

    Handwarmers?

Former VFTTer and former MWO meteorologist Jim Salge posted today that today is the coldest mean temperature (Portland, ME) and mean temps start to creep up by a few hundredths of a degree after this date. Tim

    Water Bottles -- 2022

So, Nalgene + Cozy is the map + compass of hydration technology? Or is it GPS? I can't keep up. ;) Tim p.s. I have the same two Nalgenes and cozies I've had forever. But I do use the vacuum bottle for XC skiing because it's convenient and it fits in the small backpack bottle carrier.

    SOBO AT thruhiker

Honestly, I think he just got too late of a start :) Video conditions were not that bad... He was worried about dark. It would eat at me ... forever. But again, that's just me being me. Tim

Not that I will ever do it in winter, or ever for that matter, but I'm pretty sure I would not be satisfied without starting at the summit of Katahdin. But that is just me :) HYOH, of course, and this looks like it will be entertaining. Tim

If you take a newbie out of the city and place them in a wilderness situation, which of the three things are they most likely to understand? [ETA: "Which one is mostly likely to help them get out safely, quickly, and cheaply?" I am stipulating that the have a phone and that it may be the...

Here (what I happen to think) is an important tidbit that (I happend to think) gets overlooked. We often see recommendations or lists or "requirements" that people bring * Map and compass * Ice axe and crampons but in reality (I happen to think) most outdoor enthusiasts are not experienced...

Not a great start to MLK weekend

It's been a long time since winter was "just snow". It nearly always includes some rain or sleet these days :( Still waiting to actually use my season's pass on a trail that requires it... Even with some rain, 10-12" of snow will surely get a few more trails open and skate groomed. Surely not...

Not a great start to MLK weekend

I have been rock skiing on 8K +/- at Waterville since mid-December on my Nordic Seasons Pass. I definitely would not have shelled out $1 for a trail pass yet this year had I not already paid. And, the only really skiiable terrain has been Tripoli and Livermore Roads, neither of which...

I hope I am not being perceived as unfair to Nessmuk - merely presenting a counter argument. If it works for him, that is great. It used to work for me, but does not any longer. There will always be specialized use cases, and collectors. I personally hate seeing my CD collection sit there...

That's been true forever in just about any space. First it was the 8 track, then VHS and cassette tape, and records, and now CDs and DVDs... Cars, bicycles, skis, ..., 2-stroke, 4-stroke, battery, ... gas/diesel, electric... you name it... The mobile phone has revolutionized my business and...

Only half laughing... Jerry Rice holds (or held) the record for holding the most NFL records... Tim p.s. I only put the NEHH/NE67 winter patches on my pack since that includes the NH48 plus all three in summer... 6 patches represented by 2.
